本書は、アダムスの死後１年を記念して出版され、編集者の注意書き、プロローグ、イントロダクションに続いて、アダムスがこれまでにさまざまな媒体で発表した文章やコメントを、「LIFE」「THE UNIVERSE」「AND EVERYTHING」の三部仕立てで構成されている。タイトルだけをみると、『銀河ヒッチハイク・ガイド』シリーズの第６作かと期待してしまうが、残念ながらそうではない。「LIFE」ではアダムスの少年時代の思い出や普段の生活のことなど、「THE UNIVERSE」ではコンピュータや無神論について、「AND EVERYTHING」では既に雑誌で発表済みの短編小説２本と、アダムスのコンピュータに残っていた未完の長編小説 Salmon of Doubt をアダムスのエージェントや友人たちが編集して仕上げたものが入っている。エピローグは、2001年5月14日付のガーディアン紙に掲載されたリチャード・ドーキンスの追悼文。
イギリスでは Macmillan から、アメリカでは Harmony Books から出版されている。表紙デザインやページ番号はどちらも同じだが、Macmillan
版のイントロダクションをスティーヴン・フライが書いている（表紙にも、'FOREW0RD
BY STEPHEN FRY' の文字がわざわざプリントされている）のに対し、Harmony Books 版では Christphor
Celf というアメリカ人（コンピュータ・ゲームの製作関係か？）が書いている。当然ながら内容はまったく別物なので、気になる方は
Macmillan 版と Harmony Books 版の両方をご購入あれ。ちなみに裏の見返しに載せられたアダムスの顔写真も別だった。
なお、6月22日付のロンドン・タイムズのベストセラー・リストでは第４位に入っていた。
註：以下のリストで(untitled)としたものは、一番最初の12歳のアダムスが書いた手紙を除き、タイトルもキャプションもない、ほんの数行の短い文章である。
