このデニス・プライスといふ役者は、舞台ではカワードの「陽気な幽霊」「この幸せなる種族」それにラティガンの「銘々のテーブル」などに出てゐるやうです。この役者は僕は、この映画でしか見たことがないのですが、「ルイ」の役はとぼけた感じがよく出てゐると思ひます。

ジョウン・グリーンウッド。これからまた読む予定のギネスの映画「白い背広の男」にも出てきます。が、この映画（Kind Heart)　のグリーンウッドの方がいいです。

予告した通り、八人の役を演じます。

それから、ルイの父親が結婚前に母親の家族その他観客の前で歌ふモーツアルトのドン・ジョヴァンニの中のアリアが配役の後に書かれてゐますが、それは映画の内容をよく表してゐるので、ここに書きます。

「いや、まあまあの毎日だ。月曜日にはマンチェスター、毒殺犯人の死刑。今朝はホロウェイ。それは託児所の経営者だつたな。」
Very ordinary crimes, both of them.
「二つとも、ありふれた犯罪だつた。」
~~~看守. This one we've got for you tomorrow is something special.
「明日執行されるこの人は、特別ですね。」
~~~Elliott. Yes, very much so. Even after all my years in the profession... I'm quite looking forward to him.
「いや、実に特別だ。長い私の経歴でも、こんなのは初めてだ。私は非常に楽しみにしてゐる。」
Well, I must be getting along.
「ああ、無駄話はこれぐらゐにして、もう行かないと。」
~~~看守. Good night, Mr. Elliott.

~~~Elliott. Oh, please.

「死刑の時の彼の態度、どんなものだらう。」
~~~刑務所長. I should think as the calmest you've ever known.
「今までご経験なさつたどの人間よりも落着いた態度だと思ひます。」
~~~Elliott. Noblesse oblige, doubtless. A difficult client can make
things most distressing. Some of them tend to be very hysterical.
「貴族の義務（ノブレス・オブリージュ）だな。酷く見苦しい最後を見せる人間もゐるからね。ヒステリーを起すのもゐる。」
So inconsiderate. Well, Colonel, considering the importance of the occasion... I shall retire early.
「全く考へなしだ。だからだ、大佐、こんな名誉ある機会を与へられては、私も早期に引退しなきやな。」
The last execution of a duke in this country was really badly bungled. That was in the old days of the ax, of course.
「この国での公爵を処刑した最後の例、それは酷い失敗だつたからね。まあ、あの頃は斧でやつたんだが、勿論。」

~~~刑務所長. Good evening, Your Grace. Uh, thank you, no. I, uh - I called to inquire whether you had any special wishes for breakfast.
「今晩は、ヨー・グレイス。えー、ワインは結構です。有難うございます。明日の朝食ですが、何か特別にご要望がございますでせうか。」
~~~Louis. Just coffee and a slice of toast, thank you. Oh, and perhaps a few grapes.

I hate to disappoint the newspaper-reading public... but it'll be too early for the conventional hearty breakfast.

Perhaps I should begin at the beginning.

I was a healthy baby, born of an English mother and Italian father

who succumbed to a heart attack at the moment of first setting eyes on me.

She eloped with her handsome singer... and exchanged the medieval splendors of Chalfont Castle...

for the modern conveniences of number 73... Balaclava Avenue, S. W. They were poor, but they had five happy and harmonious years...

Mama swallowed her pride...and made an effort at reconciliation with her family. They did not even reply to her letter.

In order to keep us both alive, she was reduced...to the horrible expedient of taking in a lodger.（下宿人と話している母親）

She felt that her family had conspired to cheat me of my birthright... and I passed from infancy to childhood...

in an atmosphere of family history and genealogies.
「家族の歴史、チャルフォント家の経歴を詳しく教へこまれた。」

The dukedom had been bestowed... by Charles II on Colonel Henry D'Ascoyne... for services rendered to His Majesty during his exile.
「公爵の地位は、チャールズ2世によつて、ヘンリー・ダスコイン大佐に下しおかれた。それはチャールズ2世陛下の海外追放時代、その復帰に努力した功績によるものであつた。」
Later, for services rendered to His Majesty... after his restoration by the duchess...

the title was granted the unique privilege... of descending by the female as well as the male line.

Mama scraped and saved... and sent me to the best school she could afford.
「ママは倹約に倹約をして、私をできるだけ良い学校にやつてくれた。」
One little incident of my school days occurs to me as amusing... in relation to my present situation.
「学校での一事件は、現在の状況を自分に当てはめ、微笑ましく思ひ出される。」

~~~Louis.（手記）No, in those days... I never had any trouble with the Sixth Commandment.

As to the seventh, I was hardly of an age to concern myself with it. Although I was old enough to be in love.（隣の席の女の子を見る）
「それから、第七戒律に関しては、まだ充分年が行つてゐなかつた。ただ、恋をするには充分な年になつてゐた。」
So Sibella enters my story. Sibella and her brother, Graham, were my only close friends... and we grew up together.
「ここで私の話にスィベッラが登場する。スィベッラと彼の兄グレアムは、私のただ二人の親密な友人だつた。我々は一緒に育つた。」
In their case, Mama relaxed her objection to my associating with the local children.
「ママは、私が近所に友達を作るのを、厳しく禁止してゐたが、この二人に関しては、その規則を緩めてゐた。」

~~~Louis.（手記）At least their father, Dr. Hallward, was a professional man.

~~~Louis. Well, it should be quite easy to get a job.

~~~母親. Not a job, dear. A career. I had hoped for Cambridge for you. The D'Ascoynes always go to Trinity.
「職業のことぢやないのよ、経歴、大事なのは。（ただの職業ぢや駄目。良い職業でなければ）ダスコイン家は誰でもトリニティーに行くの。」
And then, perhaps, the diplomatic.
「それから、まあ、政治の方ね。」
But I'm afraid it's no use looking as high as that.
「でもあなたにそんな高望みを言つても所詮無理。」
However, when you've passed your examination... that should equip you for a start in one of the professions.
「ただ、あなたが卒業試験にパスすれば、出だしとして何か相当の職業にはつけるんぢやないかしら。」
People of quite good family go into the professions nowadays, I understand. Now, who do we know who could help us?
「今ぢや、良い血筋の家でも、職につくことをしてゐるものね。誰かあなたの後ろ盾になつてくれる人、あるかしら。」
~~~Louis. We don't really know anyone, except the family, and they don't know us.
「僕たち、誰も知らないね。親戚しか。それに、親戚だつて、こちらではあつちを知つてゐても、あつちの方がこちらを知らない。」
~~~母親. The least we can do is try once more. I shall write to Lord Ascoyne D'Ascoyne. He can surely do something in that bank of his.
「少なくとも、やつてみる価値はあるわ。ロード・アスコイン・ダスコインに手紙を書いてみる。あの人の持つてゐる銀行のうち、どこか一つに入れてくれるわ、きつと。」
~~~Louis. Bank, Mama? Is that a profession?
「銀行？　それ、職業と言へる？」
~~~母親. This is a private bank, Louis, dear. They don't pass money over the counter.
「そこは個人の銀行。カウンターでお金を出すやうなことはしないわ。」
~~~Louis.（手記）The letter was duly dispatched... and this time we did get an answer.
「手紙は正常に配達され・・・そして、今度は返事が来た。」
~~~Louis.（手紙を母に読む）"Madam, I am instructed by Lord Ascoyne D'Ascoyne...
「奥様、私はロード・アスコイン・ダスコインから命じられ・・・」
"to inform you that he is not aware of your son's existence... as a member of the D'Ascoyne family." Signed by his secretary.
「次の連絡を致します。『ロード・アスコイン・ダスコインは、あなたのご子息が、ダスコイン一族の一員として理解してゐない』と。署名、ロード・アスコイン・ダスコイン秘書。」
~~~母親. It's very stupid of him- of them all- not to admit your existence... when one day you might be duke of Chalfont.
「あの人も馬鹿ね。いえ、あの人だけぢやない、一族みんな、馬鹿よ。あなたの存在を否定するなんてね。いつかあなたはチャルフォント公爵になるといふのに。」
~~~Louis. It's a very big "might," Mama.
「その『いつか』は、大きな『いつか』ですね、ママ。」
There must be at least 12 people before me... to say nothing of the ones who haven't been born yet.
「だつて、僕の前には少なくとも12人はゐるよ。それに、その間に産まれて来る人間だつてゐるし。」
~~~母親. Stranger things have happened.
「世の中には変つたことが起きるものだからね。」
I don't wish to be unchristian, but in view of their attitude... I could almost wish those 12 people should all die tomorrow.
「私、キリスト教徒に相応しくないことは思ひたくないけれど、あの人達の態度を見てゐると・・・明日あの12人全員が全部死んでくれれば、と思ふわ。」
~~~Louis. All except one, Mama. Because you must be duchess of Chalfont before I'm duke.（と、母親の額にキス）
「一人だけは生きてゐて貰はないと、ママ。だつて、僕が公爵になる前にママが公爵夫人でゐて下さらなければ。」
It will have to be a job, not a career, after all, Mama.
「結局僕は職につかなきや。経歴は無理だ、ママ。」
~~~母親. I'm afraid so, Louis. A D'Ascoyne in trade.（と、泣く）
「さうね、ルイ。ダスコイン一族の一人が仕事につくなんて。」
~~~Louis.（手記）Did poor Mama's silly dreaming... plant in my brain some seed which was afterwards to grow...
「可哀相なママの夢が、僕の頭に種を植ゑつけたのか、その夢が後になつて・・・」
into the most sensational criminal endeavor of the century?
「世紀の犯罪に成長することになる運命だつたとは。」
If so, I was not conscious of it at the time... for there were things of more immediate concern. Even potential dukes have to eat.
「たとへさうであつても、その当時は私はそれに全く気づかなかつた。もつと急を要する問題があつたのだ。潜在的には公爵であつても当座はとにかく食べて行かねばならない。」
Mr. Perkins, our lodger for nearly 15 years... did his best to be helpful.
「ミスター・パーキンズは殆ど15年間、私の家の下宿人であつた。その彼が、私の就職に骨を折つてくれたのだ。」
He was employed as shopwalker（ルイ、ウインドウの内装をやっている） in a local drapery store... and found employment for me there.

The possible future duke of Chalfont... became what was known as a
general assistant at the drapery.

This humiliation continued for two dispiriting years. And then one day, Mama, who had broken her glasses...
「この、私の意気を挫く屈辱は、二年続いた。そして或る日、ママは眼鏡を壊す・・・」
and could not afford to have them mended... was knocked down by a tram near Clapham Junction... and fatally injured.
「眼鏡の修理に手の回らないママは、クラファム・ジャンクションの傍で、電車の事故にあふ。そして命に関る怪我をする。」

~~~Louis. （手記）I wrote to the duke informing him of Mama's dying wish. His reply was the curtest possible refusal.
「ママの臨終の望みを、私は公爵に手紙で知らせた。その返事は、これ以上はないといふつれないものだつた。」
Standing by Mama's poor little grave in that hideous suburban cemetery...
「ひどく殺風景な郊外の墓地のみすぼらしい小さな墓がママの墓だつた。その傍に立ち、」
I made an oath that I would revenge the wrongs her family had done her. It was no more than a piece of youthful bravado...
「家族のこの酷い仕打に必ず復讐すると、私は誓ふ。この誓ひは、若い男の一片の呟き・・・小さなどんぐり・・・にすぎなかつた。」
but it was one of those acorns from which great oaks are destined to grow.
「しかしそれは、さまざまなどんぐり達の中でも、将来大きな樫の木に成長して行く運命にある、あの、どんぐりの一つだつたのだ。」
Even then I went so far as to examine the family tree... and prune it to just the living members. But what could I do to hurt them?
「しかしその時でさへ私はすぐに、家系図を調べてみた。そして害を与へるのは生きてゐるメンバーに限らうと決めた。しかし、どうやつて？」
What could I take from them... except, perhaps, their lives? I indulged for a moment in a fantasy of all 12 of them...

being wiped out simultaneously at a family reunion... by my unseen hand...

of the penniless boy from Clapham being miraculously transplanted to his birthright. I even speculated as to how I might contrive it.

~~~Louis.（手記）The next candidate for removal seemed to be young Henry D'Ascoyne... 24 years old, recently married...

as yet, without issue. I had quite an accumulation by now of D'Ascoyne data... culled from newspapers and periodicals...
「しかしまだ、子供は生れてゐない。ダスコインに関する情報は、今や、新聞、雑誌、その他の切抜きにより、相当な量に達してゐた。」
and I looked through it for a possible approach to Henry. I found one.
「ヘンリーに近づく名案はと、その切抜きを頼りに捜す。一つ見つかる。」
I bought the necessary equipment, secondhand... and bicycled down the following weekend.
「必要な道具を購入。すべてセコハンだが・・・そして、次の週末、自転車でそこへ行く。」
I had studied a couple of photographic manuals during the week... and found that, in practice, the mysteries of the camera...

demand a little more than ordinary intelligence... plus the ability to judge the subject upside-down.

It was thus, indeed, that I first saw Henry D'Ascoyne. My method of approach proved an instantaneous success.

Why not come up to my house, and I'll show it to you?
「君、家に来ない？　見せてあげるよ。」

~~~Guiness. My name's D'Ascoyne, by the way.
「ところで、僕の名前はダスコイン。」
~~~Louis. Mine is Mazzini.

~~~Louis.（手記）He seemed a very pleasant fellow... and I regretted that our acquaintanceship must be so short.
「なかなか好人物のやうに見えた。この付合ひは短く終らねばならない。それが、私には残念だつた。」

~~~Guiness. Had one of the potting sheds fixed up as a darkroom.
「陶器製造のための小屋がいくつかあるんだが、そのうちの一つを、暗室に改造してね。」
Couldn't have suited better if it had been built for it. Had the equipment sent down from town.
「もともと暗室用に作られた小屋と間違へるくらゐの良い出来でね。町から器材を送らせたんだ。」
And I must say the results have been absolutely top-hole. I'll show you some quarter-plates I've taken about the village.
「この小屋の働きと言つたらなくてね、最上級の出来栄えだ。村で撮つた写真を四つ切りに伸ばしたものを見せるよ。」
There we are. Absolutely lightproof, except for this. Everything to hand- developing dishes here, toning bath here, whole-plate enlarger.

~~~Louis. Perfect.

I don't know if you're thinking... of sending any of your efforts here to some periodical... but there's just one thing.

~~~Guiness. Yes. The fact is, my wife has views about such places...

~~~Louis.（手記）The mental picture of his wife that I had formed from Henry's words...

left me unprepared for the charm of the woman I was to meet. She was as tall and slender as a lily and as beautiful.

~~~Edith. Have you been in the neighborhood long, Mr. Mazzini?

~~~Louis. A few hours only.

I was cycling through the village... and felt compelled to stop and make a study or two of the inn. It looked so charming.
「自転車で村を通つてゐましたら、どうしても撮つてみたい景色が・・・あの宿屋のあたりの。とても魅力的に見えまして。」
~~~Edith. It does look charming. But I'm afraid it's, by no means, an influence for good in the lives of our people here.
「ええ、外から見た景色はね。でも残念ながら、ここに住んでゐる人々の心から出てきた景色ではありませんわね。」
The landlord is a former coachman of ours. I have spoken to him several times about the amount of drinking that goes on there...

but he continues to allow it.
「でも、ちつともそれを改めやうとはしません。」
~~~Louis. It is, after all, I suppose, his livelihood.

~~~Louis.（手記）I could well understand Henry's visits to the village inn... and his stock of refreshments in the darkroom.
「私はヘンリーが何故屡村の宿屋へ行くのか、これで、理解できた。それから、暗室のアルコールの隠し方も。」
Mrs. D'Ascoyne was beautiful, but what a prig she was. I wondered how to ingratiate myself with her...
「ミスィズ・ダスコインは美人だつた。しかしまあ、何といふ厳しい人間だ。私はどうやつたら彼女に気に入られるか、と考へた。」
and decided to attack on her own ground and with her own weapons.

that I realized that I'd come by chance into the most embarrassing situation. My mother was a member of the D'Ascoyne family.

She married, as they thought, beneath her. And from that day, they
refused to recognize her... or my existence.

but I have often felt that the attitude of my husband's family... has failed to move with the times-

I found the house in a whirl with preparation for Sibella's wedding to Lionel... which was to take place next day.

Before going to bed that evening, I wandered into the old nursery... to fetch a book I'd left there.
「その晩、ベッドに入る前、昔の子供部屋にぶらりと寄つてみた・・・そこに本を置き忘れてゐたのだ。」

~~~Louis. I must admit he exhibits the most extraordinary capacity for middle age... that I've ever encountered in a young man of 24.

~~~Louis.（手記）I could not help feeling that even Sibella's capacity for lying... was going to be taxed to the utmost.

Time had brought me revenge on Lionel. And as the Italian proverb says: "Revenge is a dish which people of taste prefer to eat cold."

The following Saturday I left London in the middle of the night... and reached Henry's house just before dawn.
「次の土曜日、私は真夜中にロンドンを発つた。そしてヘンリーの家に、丁度夜明け前に着いた。」
It took a mere three minutes to substitute petrol... for the paraffin in the darkroom lamp.
「暗室のランプの石油をパラフィンに変へる作業は、ただの3分しかかからなかつた。」
And I then repaired to a meadow and took a few hours'sleep... while awaiting the hour at which I could reasonably arrive at the house.
「その後私は牧場に戻り、二三時間眠る。ヘンリーの家を訪問するに適切な時間までそこで待つたのだ。」
The day dragged by in an agony of suspense for me.
「その日はじりじりとしか進まなかつた。私は苛々した。」
Henry took photograph after photograph... but seemed to have no urge whatever to follow it up with a visit to the darkroom.
「ヘンリーは次から次と写真を撮つた。しかし一向に暗室へ行かうとはしない。そんなところにはさしあたり用はない、といふ顔だつた。」

~~~Louis.（手記）I began to fear that he had suddenly taken the pledge.

~~~Guiness. I think I'll just go and develop these before tea. Care to come?
「ああ、お茶の前にこれを現像しておかう。君、一緒に行く？」
~~~Louis. I would, indeed, but I have a slight headache - the sun, I think. And I'm afraid the chemicals wouldn't improve it.
「行きたいんですが、どうもさつきから頭痛がして。太陽のせゐです、きつと。薬品の匂ひではちよつと治りさうもないので・・・」
~~~Edith. Mr. Mazzini and I will have tea under the tulip tree. I've always found that most beneficial for a headache.
「ミスター・マッツィーニと私はこのチューリップの木の下にゐます。頭痛には木の下にゐるのが一番。」

~~~Louis. I'm afraid Henry will think me a poor enthusiast.
「ヘンリーは僕のことを、あまり趣味に熱心でないな、と思ふかもしれませんね。」
~~~Edith. I sometimes think that he is too great a one. In a way, I am to blame for it. Before we were married, he had few interests.
「私時々考へるんですけど、あの人、趣味に没頭し過ぎではないかと。でも、実はこれ、私のせゐなんです。結婚する前、あの人殆どどんな事にも興味を示しませんでした。」
He used to spend the greater part of each day at his club.
「毎日ただクラブへ行つて、そこで時間を潰す、それだけでした。」

I felt that such a life was unhealthy and persuaded him to live here in the country.

I hoped that perhaps he would interest himself in the welfare of our tenantry, as I do.
「この田舎の人達への福祉に興味を持つのではないかと。」
But he became interested in photography on our honeymoon...

and since then it has become the major preoccupation of his life. Mr. Mazzini.

~~~Louis. Yes.

~~~Edith. I hope you will forgive my speaking to you on a personal matter...

but it worries me that Henry should spend so much time on his hobby... that he has little left for any more useful activity.
「でも私、あの人がこの、写真にしか時間を使はないといふのが心配で。他の有益な活動には全くと言つていいほど、時間が残らないのです。」
Am I right to let him go on like this?
「この状態のままでゐるのがあの人に良いことなのでせうか。」
~~~Louis.（手記）I could hardly point out that Henry now had no time left... for any kind of activity... so I continued to discuss his future.
「ヘンリーには、今となつてはもう何をする時間も残されてゐません、とはとても言へない。そこで私は、彼の将来についての議論を続けた。」
~~~Louis. He has never shown any wish for a career in politics?
「彼は政治政治の方面には何の興味も示さないのですか？」

~~~Louis. Nor any other ambitions?

~~~Edith. One only - to win a prize at the Salon Photography in Brussels.

The funeral service was held in the village church at Chalfont... prior to interment in the family vault.

Mrs. D'Ascoyne, who had discerned in me... a man of delicate sensibility and high purpose...

asked me to accompany her on the cross-country journey.

Interesting and somewhat depressing... for it emphasized how far I had yet to travel. There was the duke.

~~~Louis.（手記）This was not a piece of news... which I was looking forward to breaking to Sibella.
「これは、スィベッラには、知らせるのが待ち遠しいニュースではなかつた。」
She had no rights in the matter... but women have a disconcerting ability to make scenes out of nothing...
「彼女には何も文句を言ふ権利などない。しかし女性といふものは、何の理由もないことでも、喧嘩の種にする困つた能力があるものだ。」
and to prove themselves injured when they themselves are at fault.
「おまけに、自分自身に責任のあることなのに、自分が不当な扱ひを受けたと証明することが出来る能力も。」

~~~Louis.（手記）Anyhow, I had three months' grace before I need face that storm.
「とにかく、その嵐が始るまで、有難いことに、まだ三箇月の猶予がある。」

~~~Sibella. Have you taken to using attar of roses?
「あなた、香水に薔薇油を使ふやうになつたの？」
~~~Louis. No. Why?
「いや。どうして？」
~~~Sibella. Thought I could smell it. I met such a beautiful woman on the stairs just now.
「薔薇油の匂ひがするの。丁度今階段で、とびきりの美人に会つたわ。」
~~~Louis. I expect that would be Mrs. D'Ascoyne.
「ああ、それはミスィズ・ダスコインだ。」
~~~Sibella. What was she doing here?
「その人、ここに何をしに来たの？」
~~~Louis. She called in to see me.
「私に会ひに来たんだ。」
~~~Sibella. What about?
「何のために？」
~~~Louis. Business. Family business. Let me get you a glass of sherry.
「仕事の話だ。一族の仕事の話。シェリー一杯どう？」
~~~Louis.（手記）A day or so later, I received a letter from Lionel.
「それから一日二日経つた後、私はライオネルから手紙を受取つた。」
He requested an interview with me at his house on a matter of some delicacy.
「ちよつとしたことで、自分の家まで来てくれないか、といふ依頼だつた。」
I was somewhat perturbed, for nine times out of 10...
「私は内心動揺した。十のうち九つまで・・・」
what is referred to as a matter of some delicacy... is, in point of fact, one of extreme indelicacy.
「『ちよつとした』こと、と書いてある事柄は、『大変なこと』に違ひないからだ。」
Two days later I made the tedious journey to Bayswater.
「二日後、私はベイズウオーターまで、退屈な旅行を行つた。」

~~~Louis.（手記）It was typical of Lionel that he should live on the wrong side of the park.
「公園が折角あるのに、その景色の良くない方に家があつた。実にライオネルらしい。」
~~~Lionel. Hello, old boy. Have a drink.
「やあ、ルイ。一杯どうだ？」
~~~Louis. No, thank you. Never during the day.
「いや、結構。昼間は飲まない。」
~~~Lionel. You don't mind if I do? Keep out the cold.
「僕はいいかな？　寒さよけだ。」
~~~Louis. I was about to remark on the warmth of the day.
「寒さ？　今日は特別暑い、と言はうとしたばかりだ。」
~~~Lionel. Just a joke, old boy.
「ああ、冗談だ。冗談。」
~~~Louis. Ah, yes.
「さうか。」
~~~Lionel. Sit down, old boy.
「まあ、坐つてくれ。」
~~~Louis. No, thank you. I would rather stand.
「いや、結構。立つてゐた方がいい。」
~~~Lionel. A warm day, isn't it? For the time of the year, I mean.
「暑いな今日は。いや勿論、一年のこの頃にしては、といふ意味だが。」
~~~Louis. Distinctly. It's also a very busy day. May we proceed to the matter about which you wished to see me?
「確かに。それに酷く忙しい日だ。早速だが、用件を聞かせてくれないか？　私を呼び出した、その用件だ。」
~~~Lionel. Right. A matter of some delicacy, actually, old boy.
「分つた。ちよつとしたこと、神経を使ふ、仕事なんだ、実は。」
But I said to myself, "Louis's a sport and a man of the world. Always been a sport."
「しかしまあ、『ルイはいい奴だ。世間を知つてゐる。いい男だからな』と、自分に言ひきかせてね。」
~~~Louis. Thank you.
「それは有難う。」
~~~Lionel. Always admired the sporting way in which you took to Sibella marrying me and not you.
「いつも君のやり方を見て感心してゐたんだ。スィベッラに、僕と結婚すべきだ、君自身の方でなくね。これは実に男らしかつた。」
Some fellows would have taken it very differently. But "May the best man win," you said. And when I won, you behaved like a gentleman.
「それは、違う風に解釈する連中もゐただらう。しかし君は言つた『一番素敵な人間が勝つべきなんだ』とね。そして僕が勝つたら、君は実に紳士らしく振舞つた。」
So I thought as... you being keen on Sibella at one time... and you and I are old friends, I- I'd ask you to help us.

So I say to myself, "Why not talk to my old pal, Louis Mazzini...
「それで僕は自分に言つて聞かせた。」
"who we used to have such jolly times with round the old nursery fire... roasting chestnuts."
『さうだ、古い友人、ルイ・マッツィーニがゐる。栗を暖炉の傍で、楽しく一緒に焼いたこともある仲ぢやないか』・・・」
~~~Louis. I'm afraid your memory is deceiving you. By no stretch of imagination could you and I be described as ever having been pals.
「君、その記憶、欺瞞だね。君と僕が、友達関係にあつたなどど、記憶をどう引き延ばして考へやうと、どこからも出て来る筈がない。」
If I remember correctly, we detested each other cordially from the first day we met... with a detestation which increased with our years.
「私の記憶が正しければ、我々は、最初顔を合せた瞬間からお互ひを嫌つた。そしてその嫌悪は、年とともに増加したのだ。」

~~~Lionel. Always thought of you as a pal. Always have done. That's why I said to myself-

~~~Louis. It's only fair to warn you that any further expense of breath on this subject would be a waste.
「ここで警告しておいた方がずるくなくていいだらう。この問題で、君の息を使ふのは、たんなる無駄遣ひに終るだらうとね。」
~~~Lionel. You know what you're doing? Condemning me to death.
「君、君が今僕にやつてゐることがどういふことなのか、分つてゐるのか？　君は僕に死刑を宣告してゐるんだ。」
~~~Louis. What do you mean?
「それはどういふことだね？」
~~~Lionel. Only one way out for me: do away with myself.
「僕の最後の逃げ道、それは、僕自身を消すことなのだ。」
If you knew how absurd these histrionics sounded- I'm insured. At least the little woman will be provided for.
「この台詞は随分芝居がかつてゐるんだが、僕には保険がかけてある。少なくとも、スィベッラには金が入る。」
~~~Louis. Oh, don't be ridiculous.
「ああ、馬鹿なことを言うのは止めだ。」
~~~Lionel. Louis, I appeal to you. Not for my sake,（と、ルイの腰を両手ではさみ、膝まづく）but for the sake of the little woman.
「ルイ、頼む。お願ひだ。僕のためぢやない。スィベッラのためなんだ。」
~~~Louis. Please rise from that absurd position.
「馬鹿な格好は止めろ。早く立て。」
（ライオネル、仕方なく立上り）
~~~Lionel. All I can say is I th-think you're a cad. A selfish cad.
「僕が言へることは・・・君はゲス野郎だ、といふことだ。利己的なゲス野郎だ、君は。」
~~~Louis. Let me remind you of a little not-so-ancient history.
「そんな昔の話ではない話がある。」
When I was a draper's assistant and you a rich father's son, you showed me no kindness.
「私は洋服の生地を売る販売員。そして君は金持の息子だつた。君は私に何の親切も示さなかつた。」
Now our positions are reversed, and you come whining to me for favors.
「今我々の立場は逆になつた。それで君はこの私に、親切を施せと泣きついて来たのだ。」
~~~Lionel. Draper's assistant. That's right. Rotten little counter jumper. That's all you are.
「生地の販売員。その通り。カウンターでペコペコする、厭らしい、生地の販売員。さう、お前はその、生地の販売員だつた。」
Very high and mighty now... but your mother married an Italian organ-grinder.
「今ぢや、金持のご立派なご身分だ。しかし、お前の母親は、イタリアのしがないオルガン弾きと結婚したんだ。」

~~~Lionel. Huh?
「えっ？」
~~~Louis. I said stand up. I will not tolerate hearing my mother's name on your coarse tongue.
「立てと言つたんだ。私は母親の名前が、そのお前の汚（きたな）らしい舌から発せられるのを我慢して聞いてゐるわけには行かない。」
（と、右手でライオネルの両頬を殴る。ライオネル、ルイにつかみかかる。が、ルイ、それを抑へ）
If you take my advice, you'll go and put your head under a cold tap. I refuse to demean myself by fighting with a drunken oaf.
「私の忠告を聞くのなら、今すぐ水道の水で頭を冷すんだな。こんな酔つぱらひの薄のろを相手に喧嘩したとあつては、こつちの名がすたる。」
（ライオネル、壁にかかつてゐる短刀を取り、ルイにおどりかかる。が、ルイ、軽くあしらひ、ライオネルをうちのめす）
~~~Louis.（手記）There seemed no point in prolonging this vulgar brawl... so I returned to my apartment.
「こんな下品な殴り合ひを、そのまま続行するのは馬鹿げてゐた。そこで私はさつさと自分のアパートへ帰つた。」
I took a bath and decided to relax for half an hour... and efface this disagreeable scene from my memory.
「私は風呂に入り、30分ぐらゐゆつくりしてゐやうと思つた。この愚劣な会合を、私の記憶から消してしまはうと思つたのだ。」
I was not allowed to relax for long.
「その30分は、私には許されてゐなかつた。」
（玄関のベルが鳴る。ルイ、開ける。と、スィベッラがゐる）
~~~Louis. Sibella.
「スィベッラ。」
~~~Sibella. Louis, I'm sorry to worry you when you must be so busy...
but I have a piece of important news. Bad news.
「ルイ、ご免なさい、お忙しい時に。でも大事なニュースがあるの。とても悪いニュース。」
I thought you ought to know it at once. Lionel has found out about us. About me coming here.
「私、このことはあなた、すぐに承知しておいて下さらなければ、と思つて。ライオネルが私たちのことを見つけたの。私がここに来るつていふことを。」
（ルイ、真剣な表情で）
~~~Louis. Really?
「本当？」
~~~Sibella. Yes.
「ええ。」
~~~Louis. Oh.
「やれやれ。」
~~~Sibella. I had the most dreadful scene with him last night.
「夕べ私、あの人と大げんかをしたの。」
~~~Louis. Well, I suppose even Lionel isn't stupid enough to be deceived forever.
「まあね。いくらライオネルだつて、永久に騙され続けてゐる、つてことはあり得ないだらうからね。」
~~~Sibella. You won't take it so calmly when you hear. He's going to start divorce proceedings.
「あなた、そんなに落着いて聞いてはゐられない筈よ、これからの話を聞けば。あの人、私を離婚しやうとしてゐるの。」
~~~Louis. How very unsophisticated of him.
「彼にしては、随分乱暴なやり口だね、それは。」
~~~Sibella. There's only one possible way out that I can see.
「私、いろいろ考へたんだけど、これから逃れる方法はただ一つなの。」
~~~Louis. And that is?
「その、一つといふのは？」
~~~Sibella. Lionel is still in love with me. My happiness is all he cares about. He might do the gentlemanly thing and let me divorce him.
「ライオネルはまだ私を愛してゐるの。あの人が気にしてゐるのは、ただ私の幸せだけ。だから、私の方があの人を離婚する、といふことにしてくれるかもしれないの。」
~~~Louis. If?
「で、そのための条件は？」
~~~Sibella. If I were in a position to explain to him...
「私があの人に次のやうに説明しさへすればいいの。」
that otherwise he will be jeopardizing the social position not only of the future duke... but also the future duchess of Chalfont.
「『あなたがそんなことをしたら、ルイが将来公爵になるのを邪魔するだけではすまないの。私がチャルフォントの公爵夫人になるのまで邪魔することになるのよ』とね。」
~~~Louis. I see. You're a clever little thing, Sibella, but not quite clever enough.
「なるほど。君はなかなか頭がいいよ、スィベッラ。だけど、まだまだだね、ちよつと足りない。」
~~~Sibella. What do you mean?
「それ、どういふこと？」
~~~Louis. I mean that not only do I know that you're blackmailing me-
「君のやつてゐることは僕への強請（ゆすり）だ。」
an ugly word, but the only appropriate one- but I also know that you're bluffing me.
「これは悪い言葉だが、この際最も適切な言葉なので、使はせて貰ふ。しかし、強請だけではなく、それは『かまかけ』なんだ。」
~~~Sibella. Call my bluff and see.
「私があなたに何のかまかけをやつてゐるの？　言つて御覧なさい。」
~~~Louis. I will. Let me explain. It must have seemed to you that you hold a very strong hand... but-
「よし、言はう。君は強い切札を持つてゐるやうに見える。しかし、」
a very important "but"- it so happens that I hold a card which you did not even know to be in the pack.
「この『しかし』は大きい『しかし』だ。しかし、こちらの方は、君の予想もつかない、もつと強い切札があるんだ。」

「おやおや、かまかけは、どつちの方なの？」
~~~Louis. It so happens that I was with Lionel less than an hour ago.
And it was transparently clear from his demeanor and conversation...
「僕はね、偶々なんだが、丁度一時間前にライオネルに会つてね、話をしたんだが、その会話で非常に明らかになったことがある・・・」
that he had not the faintest suspicion that you and I had any relationship...
「それは君と僕との間に、彼は何の疑ひも持つてゐないといふことだ。」
other than that of- as he would probably put it- old pals who used to roast chestnuts together round the jolly old nursery fire.
「彼の言葉通りの台詞で言ふとね、昔、暖炉の傍で君と僕とが仲良く栗を焼いた、そんな昔の友達同士・・・それ以上の関係はなし、だ。」
So, while thanking you for the honor that you've done me...
「従つて折角の君の僕への名誉ある結婚の申込だがね、」
I must decline your offer because I have other arrangements... which make it impossible for me to accept it.

and I was proved correct... for it produced an invitation for Edith and me to spend a few days at the castle.

I must confess that I could not suppress an agreeable sensation of triumph... as I approached the castle gateway...

in circumstances so different from those in which I had last done so. It was just an informal little house party.

「午後、イースルレッドは私を誘ひ、城の見物をした。城壁の上に立つてあたりを眺めるのは、そして・・・」
and know that the acres which stretched as far as the eye could see... would soon be mine.
「目の前に開けてゐる何エーカーといふ景色が、近いうちすべて私の所有になるといふことを知るのは、楽しかつた。」
And it amused me to cover much the same ground as that of my sixpenny tour.
「以前ここを6ペンスの金で観光旅行した、あの土地全部が含まれるのだ。それは愉快なことだつた。」
I had never been in a building so lavishly equipped... with the instruments of violent death.

And the end of the day found my host still intact and myself still without a plan.
「一日経ち、この家の主人は無傷、そして私にはまだ何の計画も浮ばなかつた。」

~~~Guiness. Dullest woman I ever met in my life. Plain too.

But good breeding stock. Good breeding stock, the Redpoles. And they litter a very high proportion of boys.

~~~Guiness. Duty to the family, really.

「エー、それで、お二人のその・・・御婚姻は何時？」
~~~Guiness. Very soon. I'm not growing any younger. Mightn't get a son the first time. Quiet wedding, I thought.
「今すぐにでも。これから若くなる、といふ年でもないからな。すぐにでも息子が欲しいのだ。静かな式にしやうと思つてゐる。」
Maud's hardly the type for St. Margaret's. We shall honeymoon on the Riviera and then go on to Italy afterwards.
「モードは、セント・マーガレットとは違ふ。派手な式など望んではをらん。ハネムーンはリヴィエラ、それからイタリアに行くか。」
No sense inflicting her on one's friends. When she's got a family, that'll keep her out of the way.
「友人にモードを紹介するなど、無駄なことだ。それに、最初の子供が産まれたら、もう親戚づきあひなど全くなしにする。」
~~~Louis.（地の文） This news threw me into such distress of mind... that, had I had poison in my possession...
「このニュースは私を絶望の淵へと追ひこんだ。だからもし手持ちに毒があつたとしたら、」
I would probably have administered it to Ethelred there and then... and chanced the consequent inquiries.
「その場でイースルレッドに、それを使つただらう。そしてその後、きつと警察の取調べを受けることになつただらう。」
One thing was clear - If I did not succeed in disposing of him... during this present visit to the castle...
「一つ、確実なことがあつた。もし私が、この訪問の最中に、イースルレッドを始末しなかつたとしたら・・・」
I was likely to see the ruin of my whole campaign.
「今までやつて来た全ての努力が水の泡だ、といふことである。」
~~~Louis.（イースルレッドに） My best wishes for a successful outcome.

~~~Louis.（手記）The next morning I went out shooting with Ethelred... or rather, to watch Ethelred shooting...
「次の朝、私はイースルレッドと狩に出かけた・・・いや、 イースルレッドが狩をするのを見に出かけた、と言つた方が正しい。」
for my principles will not allow me to take a direct part in blood sports.
「何故なら、私の原則は、血の出るスポーツは禁止、だからだ。」

~~~Guiness. Been round the traps this morning, Hoskins?
「ホスキンズ、今朝の罠の見回りは終つたのか。」
~~~Hoskins. Not yet, Your Grace.
「まだです、ヨー・グレイス。」
~~~Guiness. Sounds as if we've bagged one there. Ah. Been losing so much game lately, we've started setting the mantraps again.
「あそこに一人、どうやらかかつたやうだ。（ルイに）アー、このところどうも獲物が少ないので、人間用罠をまたやり始めたところなんだ。」
（密猟者を捕まえる。密猟者は罠に足をとられてゐて、逃げられない）
~~~Guiness. Hoskins is now going to thrash you. Then he'll let you go.
Let this be a lesson to you not to poach on my land.
「ホスキンズが今からお前を鞭で打つ。それから放してやる。この土地で密猟をやるとどうなるか、いい見せしめだ。」

「人間用罠は禁止だと思つてゐましたが。」
~~~Guiness. They are.
「その通り。禁止だ。」
~~~Louis. What happens if he tells the police?
「もしあの男が警察に言つたらどうなります。」
~~~Guiness. He comes up before the bench for poaching, gets six months in jail.
「裁判にかけられるな、奴が。密猟のかどで。牢屋に6箇月だ。」
If he keeps his mouth shut, he just gets a few days in bed. Which would you choose? Only way to deal with these ruffians, I assure you.
「黙つてゐれば、二三日寝床で休んでゐるだけですむ。君だつたらどうするね？　ああいふならず者を相手を相手にするには、これが一番だ。」
~~~Louis. Oh. I must have dropped my cigarette case back there. I'll catch you up.
「あっ、私、さつきのところでタバコ入れを落したらしいです。すぐ追ひつきますから。」

that a telephone communication has just been received from the Home Office.
「電話連絡がたつた今内務省から入りました。」
A note has been found, undoubtedly in Mr. Holland's handwriting... expressing his intention to commit suicide. It is a miracle.
「書置が見つかりました。ミスター・ホランドの筆跡に間違ひないさうで、彼の自殺の意向がこれで証明されました。奇跡です。」
