The Falen Idol

最 初に登場人物

Ralph Richardson　ベインズを演じます。この人は、「アンナ・カレーニナ」でアン ナの夫、カレーニンをやりました。それから、「ハバナの男」で、ロンドンの情報局の局長をやりましたが、覚えていらつしやいますか？

　ベインズは大使館で、執事をしてゐます。大使の子供フィリップ に、自分がアフリカでどんなに大活躍をしてゐたかを話して聞かせてゐます。暴動が起きた時、自分がいかに独りでそれを抑へたか、自分の命 を救うため、相手をどのやうに殺したか、等々。しかしそれは全てフィリップの関心を買ふための嘘だつたのです。

Bobby Henrey　　フィリップを演じます。この人は知りません。　ベインズが英 雄であると信じてゐるフィリップにとつて、ベインズのすること全てが素晴らしく見えてゐます。

Michele Morgan　大使館で働いてゐる、ジュリーを演じます。ベインズと相思相愛 の仲ですが、ベインズに妻がゐるので、きちんとした関係を保つてゐます。

Sonia Dresdel　ベインズの妻、ミスィズ・ベインズを演じます。がみがみと口う るさい妻です。

Denis O'Dea　警察の調査官、クロウを演じます。

Jack Hawkins　警察官を演じます。

（大 使官邸。ここで会議があった模様。それが終って、慌ただしく各国の代表が出て行く）

（「Chancellery. Military Attache. Press Attache」 と看板）

（「大 使館事務所。大使館付き武官。報道官。」）

（子 供、階上からその様子を見ている。女中が階上から荷物を持つて来る。係の者、急いでそれを取りに上る。リチャードスン、係に手伝う）

（リ チャードスン、おどけて灰皿の灰を暖炉に入れる。階上の子供にこっそりとほほ笑む）

~~~Richardson. Good day, sir.

「今日は。」

~~~係1. In his office there, miss.

「あそこの事務室です、ミス。」

~~~係2.（リチャードスンに）Uh, Baines, is, uh - is the ambassador's car at the door?

「ああ、ベインズ、大使の車はもう来てゐるのか？」

~~~Richardson. It's waiting, sir.

「はい、もう来てゐます。」

~~~係2. His Excellency has been delayed. He'll drive straight to the airport.

「大使は少し遅れてゐる。飛行場まで、寄り道なしで行く。」

~~~Richardson.（とまた、子供の方を見てウインク）Of course.

「分りました。」

~~~外 交官. Oh, uh, Baines, flowers for her room. You know the sort my wife likes. After eight months in a hospital the place must look like home.

「ああ、ベインズ、彼女の部屋に花を頼む。妻の花の好みは分つて ゐるな？　８箇月病院にゐたんだ。あそこが家庭そのものに見えてくれなきやな。」

~~~Richardson. She'll find everything just as she left it, sir.

「８箇月前奥様が 出て行かれた、そのままの様子にお作りしておきます。」

~~~外 交官. The doctors don't yet know if they'll permit her to fly. The journey will be a strain.

「医者はまだ、彼女が飛行機に乗れるだけの体力があるかどうか、 危ぶんでゐる。旅程は少し辛いものになりさうだ。」

~~~Richardson. Master Phillipe, sir.

「マスター・フィリップ！」

（と、 子供を呼ぶ。子供、階段を降りて来る）

~~~大 使. He should have his hair cut. He looks as if we've neglected him.

「散髪に行かせないとな。これぢやまるで我々が子供を無視してゐ るやうに見える。」

（大 使、階上の子供に、少し大きな声で）

~~~大 使. Any message for your mother, Phillipe?

「おい、フィリップ、お母さんに何か言ふことはないのか？」

~~~Phillipe. Tell her I've got something to show her.

「ママに言つて。僕、ママに見せるものがあるつて。」

~~~大 使. That will bring her home.（フィリップに）Look after the embassy while I'm away.（リチャードスンに）Be back on Monday morning with my wife, I hope.

「さうだな、それを聞けば妻も家に帰りたいと思ふかもしれない。 私のゐない間に、大使館の面倒を見るんだぞ。帰りは月曜日の朝だ。妻と共に帰るつもりでゐる。」

~~~Richardson. I hope so too, Your Excellency. It's been a long time.

「御一緒の御帰還をお祈りします。もう長いですから。」

（フィ リップ、ベランダに出て、下のタクシーに呼びかける）

~~~Phillipe. Papa. Papa. Au revoir, Papa.

「パパ、パパ、オ・ルヴワール、パパ。」

（フィ リップ、秘密の隠し場所を開けて、蛇に話しかける）

~~~Phillipe. Hello, Macgregor. Aw. Hello, Macgregor. Hello. Come on. Come on. Hmm.

「ハロー、マグレガー。ああ、ハロー、マグレガー。さあ、こつち だ、こつち。」

（階 下で、リチャードスンとモルガン、二人で何か話している。フィリップ、蛇を弄（もてあそ）びながら、それを見ている）

~~~Phillipe. Come on. Oh. Look. London.

「（蛇に話しかける）さあ、見てみろ、あれがロンドンだ。」

（階 下。男の客がもう一人出て行くので、リチャードスン、端により）

~~~Richardson. Good day, sir.

「では、失礼します。」

（遠 くからベインズの妻、ベインズを呼ぶ）

~~~Mrs. Baines. Baines.

「ベインズ！」

（リ チャードスン、モルガンを外に出し、玄関の扉を閉める）

~~~Phillipe. Baines!

「ベインズ！」

（リ チャードスン、フィリップを指で「こつちに来い」と合図。フィリップ、降りて行く）

（階 下で、掃除女二人、掃除をしてゐる）

~~~掃 除女1. One of her moods again. Always some grouse.

「また始まつた（これ、ミスィズ・ベインズの機嫌のこと）。何か また、文句だよ。」

~~~掃 除女2. Not healthy to be as clean as all that.（フィ リップに）You be careful, sonny. Mrs. Baines is on the warpath again.

「綺麗好きもほどがあるわ。あんなの病的。坊や、注意するのよ。 ミスィズ・ベインズ、また荒れてゐるやうだからね。」

~~~掃 除女1. Anyway, these foreigners like a bit of dirt. Poor kid. Be a good thing for him when his mother gets back.

「（客が汚したのを見て）とにかく外人て、すぐ汚して行くから ね。（フィリップのことを）可哀想にあの子。でも、お母さんが帰つて来るのはいいことね、あの子に。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. Master Phillipe, just because your father's away for a couple of days... you mustn't think you can run wild all over the house.

「マスター・フィリップ、二三日お父上が留守です。でも、だから と言つて、家中を暴れ回るのは禁止です。分りますね。」

~~~Phillipe. No, Mrs. Baines.

「はい、分りました、ミスィズ・ベインズ。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. I've got plenty to do without clearing up after you.  What's that you've got in your hand? Show me. What is it?

「あ なたの後を追つて、片づけをするなんて暇は私にはないの。分るわね？（フィリップがポケットに何かを持つてゐる様子なので）それを見せな さい。何？　それ。」

（こ れは、実は、小さい蛇。つまりマグレガー。）

~~~Phillipe. Piece of chalk.

「白墨だよ。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. You've been making marks all over the floor again?　 　Well?  Have you?

「また床にそれで落書きのし放題ね。白状しなさい。やつたでせ う。」

~~~Phillipe. Just little marks.

「うん、少しはね。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. Give me the chalk. Come on. Give it to me. Have you done what I told you to do, Master Phillipe?

「その白墨をかしなさい。さあ、渡すんです。マスター・フィリッ プ、あなたにやつておけと命じたことがありましたね。あれをやりましたか？」

~~~Phillipe. Done what?

「何ですか？　あれつて。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. Got rid of it.

「捨てることです。」

~~~Phillipe. Yes.

「はい。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. You know what happens to little boys who tell lies?

「嘘つきの少年にはどういふことが起きるか、あなた、分つてゐま すね？」

I won't have any vermin in any house I run. Did you put it where I told you to? Down the lavatory? Did you? Answer me. Did you?

「私が任されてゐる家で、毒虫を飼うなんて、私は許しません。処 置する場所も言ひましたが、そこに捨てましたか？　便所ですよ。捨てましたか？　答へなさい。捨てましたか？」

~~~Phillipe. Yes.

「はい。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. What are you hiding in your pockets? Bring your hand out. Show me. Come along.

「あなた、ポケットに何を隠してゐるんです。手を出しなさい。見 せて。さ、早く。」

~~~Phillipe. Only toffees.（と飴を見せる）

「飴 です、ただの。」

~~~Mrs. Baines. I won't have you eating between meals, Master Phillipe. Give them to me.（と、飴を取上げる）

「間 食は許さないと言つてありますよ、マスター・フィリップ。よこしなさい。」

You need a mother's care.  I've tried to do it for months.  Is that all you've got?  Run along,

and try and not get into mischief.

「あなたには母親の世話といふものが必要なの。私、何箇月もかけてそれをやらうとしてきた。本当にこれで全部なのね？　あなたが持つてゐるものは。ぢや、いい、行つて。馬鹿なことに関はりを持つんぢやないのよ。」

（フィリップ、急いで逃げる）It's difficult enough with half the staff away.

「召使ひが半分も減つて。やりくり、大変。」

~~~Harry.  See you on Monday, Mr. Baines.

「では、ミスター・ベインズ、月曜日にまた。」

~~~Richardson.  Have a good weekend, Harry.（フィリップがいるのを見て）Get out of it. 

「ああ、良い週末を、ハリー。マスター・フィリップ、さあ、そこをどいて。」

Can't you see I'm busy?  Can't you pick on someone else?  Well, since you are here, you might as well do a job of work.  Get on with that.

「私が忙しいのは見て分るだらう？　誰か遊び相手はゐないのか？　よーし、どうせそこにゐるんだ、仕事でもして貰はう。（スプーンとブラシを出して）さ、片づけて。」

~~~Phillipe.  Look. Macgregor.

「ほら、マグレガーだよ。」

~~~Richardson.  Oh. Hmm.  Looking well this morning, isn't he?

「ああ。今朝は調子良ささうだな。」

~~~Phillipe.  Have you got a little box for him?

「これのために箱か何かないかな？」

~~~Richardson.  Little box?  Hmm. Might find something.

「箱？　よし、何か捜さう。」

~~~Phillipe.  Will you take me for a walk this afternoon, Baines?

~~~Richardson.  Well, I might, if you work hard enough.  I might. We'll see.  Quite a lot to be done.  This is exciting - your mother coming back- isn't it?

「君がちやんと働いてくれれば、行くかな？　うん、行かう。君のでき次第だ。やることは沢山ある。さうさう、お母さんが帰つて来るんだつて？　すごいね。」

（と、丸い箱の中身を空け、フィリップに投げてやる）

~~~Phillipe.  Yes, but, you know, I don't remember her very well.

「うん。でも僕、よく覚えてゐないよ、お母さんのこと。」

~~~Richardson.  Have a glass of pop, Phile. Spot of drink will do us good. Give us an appetite for dinner.

「サイダーを一杯どうだ？　フィル。ちよつと一杯飲むと元気がでるぞ。夕食に食欲も出る。」

~~~Phillipe.  I am having my meals down here, aren't I?

「（お母さんが帰つたら）僕もここで食事？」

~~~Richardson.  Of course.

「勿論。」

~~~Phillipe.  What have you got for chop?

「チョップには何を食べるの？」

~~~Richardson.  Chop?

「チョップ？」

~~~Phillipe.  You said that was what food was called in Africa.

「アフリカでは食事のことをチョップつて言ふんぢやなかつた？」

~~~Richardson.  Oh, yes, of course. Chop.

「ああ、さうさう、チョップだ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Tell me more about Africa.

「アフリカについて、もつと話して。」

~~~Richardson.  Another time.

「またいつか。」

~~~Phillipe.  Was is it hot there?

「アフリカ、暑かつた？」

~~~Richardson.  You never felt such heat.  Not - Not even where you come from.  Not a nice heat, mind you, like you get in the park on a day like this.  The white man's grave, they call it.  Wet. Smelling of rot.

「あんな暑さつてないね。この前君のゐたところよりもつとだ。気持のよい暑さぢやない、今日のやうな日に公園で感じる、あの暑さとは違ふ。白人の墓場つてみんな言つてる。蒸すんだ。そして腐敗物の臭ひ。」

~~~Phillipe.  What does rot smell of?

「腐敗物つて、どんな臭ひ？」

~~~Richardson.  Eh?  Oh, the opposite to this.

「ああ、これと反対の臭ひだね。」

~~~Phillipe.  I smell that carbolic stuff.

「これ、炭酸の臭ひだけど。」

~~~Richardson.  When there's nothing but carbolic round you hanker after rot.

「それはね・・・もし世の中に炭酸の臭ひしかなかつたら、腐敗物の臭ひに恋ひこがれるやうにもなるだらうつてことだ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Mmm. I understand.

「ああ、分るよ、それ。」

~~~Richardson.  Hmm.

「フム。」

~~~Phillipe.  It reeks of chains.

「鎖だね。鎖から出てくる錆の臭ひだ。」

~~~Richardson.  Yes. Hmm.  It's a man's life out there, Phile.

「うん。まあね。しかしアフリカでは、男の人生があるんだ、フィル。」

~~~Phillipe.  But why did you leave Africa?

「どうしてアフリカを出てしまつたの？」

~~~Richardson.  Why? Oh, um, get married, you know.

「どうして？　ウン、まあ、結婚したからね。」

~~~Phillipe.  Wasn't there anybody to marry out there in Africa?

「アフリカには、結婚する人、ゐなかつたの？」

~~~Richardson.  Oh, yes. Plenty.  But they weren't white.

「いや、それはたーくさんゐたよ。しかし、白人ぢやなかつたからね。」

~~~Phillipe.  Must they be white?

「白人でなきや、駄目なの？」

~~~Richardson.  Um - Hmm.

「うん・・・まあ。」

（掃除女二人、が来たので、その一人に）

~~~Richardson.  Ah, Mrs. Patterson.  What are you doing with those?

「ああ、ミスィズ・パタスン。それ、何をしてゐるんだ？」

~~~掃除女1.  Mrs. Baines told us to fill 'em.  Where's Dolly and the others?

「ミスィズ・ベインズのお言ひつけで、これを一杯にしておくんです。ドリー、それに他の召使ひたちはどこなんでせう？」

~~~Richardson.  The weekend off. The place is empty except for Mrs. Baines, Phile and me. We carry on.  Now Phile, drink up the pop and lend a hand with this.

「ああ、週末の休暇だ。あそこはミスィズ・ベインズ、フィル、それに私だけしかゐない。あそこの掃除は三人でやる。さあ、フィル、サイダーを飲んで。これを手伝つてくれ。」

~~~掃除女1.  Don't overwork him, Mr. Baines.

「ミスター・ベインズ、坊やをあまり働かせ過ぎては・・・」

~~~Richardson.  Got to make a living like everybody else.

「いやいや、みんなと同じやうに自分で生きることを考へるやうにさせなくちや。」

~~~Phillipe.  Does everybody make a living?

「みんなは、自分で生きてゐるの？」

~~~Richardson.  Everybody.

「さう、みんなさうだ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Even Papa?

「僕のパパも？」

~~~掃除女.  Just a slave really.  Not an easy life like us.

「さう。奴隷と同じだ、本当に。我々とは違ふ。楽な仕事ではない。」

~~~Phillipe.  Can you make a living in Africa?

「アフリカでもベインズ、自分で生きられる？」

~~~Richardson.  Make a living?  You can make a fortune. Make anything you like.  Make elephants and kings and castles.  Yes. And shoot 'em too.  If they don't get you.

「自分で生きられるかつて？　それどころぢやない。あそこでなら一財産作れるさ。好きなことが出来る。象も作れるし、王様だつて、お城だつて。さう、それに、さういふものを撃ち殺すことだつて出来る。相手がこちらにかかつてこなければね。」

~~~Phillipe.  Can I show her the gun?

「鉄砲、（女の召使ひに）見せてやらうか。」

~~~掃除女1.  Don't you dare. Leave it where it is.  It's not loaded, and Baines keeps the safety catch on.

「そんなもの出さないで。あつたところに置いておきなさい。弾はこめてないし、ベインズが安全装置をかけてゐますからね。」

~~~Richardson.  Leave it be, Phile.

「フィル、そのままにしておくんだ。」

~~~Phillipe.  It's got bullets too!

「弾だつて入つてる。」

~~~Richardson.  Phile - Phile.

「フィル、フィル。」

（と、止めさせやうとする。が、その間にミスィズ・ベインズが来る。フィリップ、慌ててピストルを引出しにしまふ）

~~~Mrs. Baines.  So there you are.  Holding up the work again?  There's still plenty to do.

「（女たちに）またそんなところで。仕事はほつたらかし？　まだやることは沢山あります。」

~~~掃除女1.  We'll get it finished.

「もう全部すませました。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  By sitting around here all day long?

「そこに一日中坐つてゐて、全部できるのね？」

~~~掃除女1.  Good morning, Mr. Baines. Till Monday.

「失礼します、ミスター・ベインズ。ではまた明日。」

~~~Richardson.  Ta, ta.

「ああ、有難う。」

（掃除女1と2、退場）

~~~Mrs. Baines.  No business to keep that gun in the house.  Come along, Master Phillipe.  Sit down there. Get on to that salad.

「家の中に拳銃をおいておくなんて、どういふことでせう。さ、マスター・フィリップ、そこに坐つて。そのサラダを食べなさい。」

~~~Phillipe.  Baines is going to take me for a walk this afternoon.

「今日の午後、ベインズが僕を散歩に連れて行つてくれるんだ。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  No, he isn't.  Not with all this work to do.

「いいえ、ベインズは散歩には行きません。仕事が沢山あるんですからね。」

~~~Richardson.  There'll be time enough for both.

「仕事も散歩も出来る。」

~~~Phillipe  Oh, please.

「ああ、止めて。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Work first, and pleasure afterwards.

「まづ仕事、楽しみはその後。」

（と、パンの皿をフィリップに差出す。フィリップ、首を横に振る）

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Easy to see you've been eating between meals, Master Phillipe.  I'm sick to death of your ways, spoiling the boy.

「間食をしてゐたつてこと、見え見えね、マスター・フィリップ。（ベインズに）この子を甘やかしてばかりゐて。あなたのやり方、私、嫌ひ。」

~~~Phillipe.  He didn't. I took it.

「ベインズが悪いんぢやない。僕が自分でやつたんだ。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Lying again, Master Phillipe?

「またまた嘘ね、マスター・フィリップ。」

~~~Richardson.  There's lies and lies.

「嘘に次ぐ嘘か。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  What do you mean by that?

「あなた、それ、どういふ意味？」

~~~Richardson.  Some lies are just kindness.

「親切による嘘もあるからね。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Kindness?  Temper, temper. I won't have you swearing in front of the boy.  Do go on, Master Phillipe. What are you waiting for?

「親切による嘘？　また怒る気？　子供の前で悪い言葉は許しません。（フィリップに）さあ、マスター・フィリップ。何をぐずぐずしてゐるんです。早く食べなさい。」

~~~Phillipe.  I don't want any.

「僕、何も食べたくない。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Master Phillipe, do as you're told and eat it up. Go along.

「マスター・フィリップ、言はれた通りにして、早く食べるんです。さ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Why don't you let Baines take me for a walk?

「どうしてベインズに許さないんです、僕と散歩に行くことを。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Because I say so.

「私がさう言つてゐるからです。」

~~~Phillipe.  I hate you.

「僕、あんた、嫌ひだ。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Master Phillipe, you'll say you're sorry for that.

「マスター・フィリップ、『ご免なさい』と言ひなさい。」

~~~Phillipe.  I'm not sorry.

「僕、謝ることなんかない。」

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Very well. Go straight upstairs to the nursery, and you'll stay there for the whole afternoon.  Do you hear me?  Go along. Up, up, up!

「よろしい。分りました。二階に、子供部屋に行きなさい。午後いつぱい、そこにゐるんです。聞いてますね？　さ、早く。上つて、上つて。」

（リチャードソン、こっそり蛇の入れ物をフィリップの方に押してやる）

（フィリップ、ミスィズ・ベインズがこちらを見てゐない隙に、その入れ物を取り、テーブルを去る）

~~~Mrs. Baines.  Get along with you. Go along.

「さ、早くなさい。早く。」

~~~Phillipe.  I don't care.

「僕、構はないや、外出禁止だつて。」

（フィリップ、子供部屋で、蛇に鏡を見せながら）

~~~Phillipe.  Hello, Macgregor.  Look. You're very pretty, you know.

「やあ、マグレガー。ほら、見て御覧、お前は綺麗なんだぞ、分るね？」

（フィリップ、物音がするのでベランダへ出る。手すりから下を見る。リチャードソンが出て行くところ。鏡で光を反射させ、こつちに気づかせやうとするが、うまく行かない。口笛を吹くがこれもうまく行かない。呼びかける）

~~~Phillipe.  Baines!  Baines!

「ベインズ、ベインズ。」

（子供部屋に駈け戻り）

~~~Phillipe.  Quick. Come on, Macgregor.  I got you.

「さあ、行くぞ、マグレガー。お前もつれて行く。」

（と、蛇を掴み）

~~~Phillipe.  Ah!

「よし。」

（蛇をポケットに入れる）

（階段を降りやうとするが、ミスィズ・ベインズがいて駄目。非常階段を駆け降りる。走つて居酒屋（Tavernの看板がある店）に行く）

~~~Phillipe.  Baines!

「ベインズ。」

~~~バーテン.  Mustn't come in here, sonny.

「坊や、あんたはここには入れないよ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Isn't Mr. Baines here?

「ミスター・ベインズはゐない？」

~~~バーテン.  No. Hasn't been in here yet.

「ええ、まだいらしてません。」

（フィリップ、外へ出て、ケーキのショーウインドウを見る。虫がケーキの上を這つている。ふと見るとリチャードソンとモルガンがゐる）

~~~Phillipe.  Baines!

「ベインズ！」

（二人、フィリップを見る）

~~~Richardson.  Phile.  What are you doing here?

「フィル。君、ここで何をしてゐるんだ？」

「ウインドウから、君を見てゐたんだ。」

~~~Richardson.  Are you by yourself?

「君、一人？」

~~~Phillipe.  Yes.

「うん。」

~~~Richardson.  You gave me a start.

「ずゐぶん驚いたよ。」

~~~Phillipe.  I thought it would be funny.

「笑へると思つたんだ。」

~~~Richardson.  Yes. It's funny. Of course it's funny.  Phile, this is Julie.

「笑へる・・・うん、確かに笑へる。笑へるな。フィル、こちらはジュリーだ。」

~~~Phillipe.  How do you do?

「初めまして。」

~~~Richardson.  Have a bun.（と、自分のケーキをフィリップに渡す）

「ああフィル、これを食べて。」

He spells his name queer.  P- H-I-L-E. Phile.  Oh, she -（と、モルガンのケーキも取って） she hasn't got an appetite, isn't eating.  You can have both of them.  You don't need to take any notice of us.

~~~取調官.  We picked him up in Hilton Street.  There's been an accident?

~~~Richardson.  Yes.

~~~取調官.  Over there?

「あそこでか？」

~~~Richardson.  The doctor's with her now.

「今、先生が来て下さつてゐます。」

~~~Richardson.  Now... just - just -just sit down there... for a moment, Phile.

「ああ、フィル、そこに・・・そこにちよつと、坐つてゐて。」

~~~取調官.（リチャードソンに）How did it happen?

「どんな具合に起きたんです？」

~~~Richardson.  We'd had a few words up there.  She was angry with the boy for some reason.  The next thing I knew... she'd slipped going down the stairs.

「私と女房はあそこで、話をしてゐました。何かの理由で、彼女はフィリップのことを怒つてゐたんです。すると何かの拍子で・・・彼女は足をすべらせたのでせう、階段を転げおちてゐました。」

~~~医者.（リチャードソンに）I'll be off. There's nothing more that I can do.  You better tell the ambassador at once.

「私はこれで。これ以上私のすることはありませんから。大使にすぐ連絡してください。」

~~~Richardson.  He's away.  I've phoned the first secretary.

「大使は外国です。第一秘書には電話しました。」

~~~医者.  Don't worry, man.  More than you can help.  You did all that you could.  These things happen, you know.

「心配はありません。これはあなたの手でどうかう出来るものではなかつたのです。あなたの出来ることは全て果してあります。かういふことは起きるものです。」

~~~Richardson.  I can't believe that she's –

~~~医者.  I know.  The ambulance will be coming.  I'll sign the certificate first thing in the morning.  Let me see. Where did I leave my coat?

「分ります。救急車が来ます。明日朝一番で、証明書に署名します。待つて、エーと、私のコートは？」

~~~Richardson.  It's here, I think.

「ここです、きつと。」

~~~医者.  Don't think me heartless.  In my position one must try to be hard.

~~~取調官.  We found him wandering around.  We were going to send him home when we heard about the accident.  He said he was sleepwalking.

「この坊やが道をうろついてゐるのを見つけたんです。この子を家に返さうとしてゐた時、ここの事故のことで電話があつたのです。この子は、夢で歩いてゐた、と言つてゐました。」

~~~医者.  Why, I know Phillipe.  He doesn't walk in his sleep.  Do you, Phillipe?  What's the boy been doing?  Now, listen, Phillipe, did anything happen to frighten you?

「ああ、私はフィリップのことはよく知つてゐる。夢で外を歩くやうな子ぢやない、この子は。さうだらう？　フィリップ。この子は何をしてゐたんだ。さあフィリップ、お前、何か怖いことを見たんぢやないのか？」

~~~Richardson.  We went to the zoo, that's all.  The boy's tired out.  I'll take him upstairs to bed.

~~~医者.  Wait a moment.  Come here, Phillipe.  Did he see it?

「ちよつと待ちなさい。ここへ来て、フィリップ。（ベインズに）この子は事故を見たのかな？」

~~~Richardson.  I don't think so.

「さうは思ひませんが。」

~~~医者.  Well, you're a fine sort of chap, aren't you, wandering about at night in your pajamas.  Who do you think you are- Nick Carter?  Where'd you get this outfit?

「やれやれ、フィリップ、お前は大変な子だな、パジャマで真夜中に街をうろついたりして。自分が何だと思つてゐるんだ？　ニック・カーターだと思つてゐるんぢやないだらうな。（ニック・カーターは探偵小説の探偵らしい）この着物、どこで手に入れたんだ？」

~~~Richardson.  It's long past bedtime.  We'll go upstairs.  He needs sleep.

「もう寝る時間はとつくに過ぎてゐます。私たちは二階に行きます。フィリップには睡眠が必要です。」

~~~医者.  I'm a doctor, Baines.（フィリップに）Why was she angry with you, Phillipe?

「ベインズ、私は医者だよ。フィリップ、ミスィズ・ベインズはお前にどうして怒つてゐたんだ、フィリップ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Because of secrets.

「秘密のことで、です。」

~~~医者.  Secrets?（リチャードソンに）Do you know what he means?

「秘密？　ベインズ、君、この子のいふ意味が何か、分るのか？」

（勿論ベインズは、その秘密が、ジュリーと自分のことである、とジュリーと自分のことである、とおほよそ感づいてゐる。

１１月１３日の~~~Mrs. Baines.  Good.  I suppose she was having tea with him.

「よし、それなら・・・その女の人、彼とお茶を飲んでゐたのね？」が、二人の秘密。）

~~~Richardson.  You've no business pestering the boy.  He's half asleep.

「この子に問ひ詰めるなんて、今は駄目です。この子は半分眠つてゐるんです。」

~~~医者.  What were those secrets, Phillipe?  Come on. You can tell me.  Was she angry at the zoo?

~~~Phillipe.  No.

~~~医者.（取調官に）Dr., um - Dr. What's-his-name is the police doctor, isn't he? Dr. Wilson?

（ここで大使の秘書、帰つて来る。玄関の扉を開けて）

~~~秘書.  Good evening, Dr. Fenton.  This is a terrible business.  Is Baines about?

「今晩は、ドクター・フェントン。ひどい話だな、これは。ベインズはゐるんだね？」

~~~医者.  He's upstairs putting the child to bed.  He was found in the street, scared.

「今子供さんを連れて、二階に上つてゐるところです。お子さんは、道路で保護されたんです。」

~~~秘書.  What about?

「どうしたんだ。」

~~~医者.  I should like the police doctor called in, if you don't mind.

「警察医を呼んで貰ふやう頼みました。お差し支へなければ。」

~~~秘書.  Police doctor?  What's he got to do with it?

「警察医？　何か問題があるといふのか。」

~~~医者.  I should like Dr. Wilson called.

「ドクター・ウィルスンに来て貰つた方がよいと思ひます。」

~~~秘書.  Surely there is nothing to worry you, is there?

「君が心配するやうなことは、君はないといふんだな？」

~~~医者.  Possibly not.

「ええ、多分ありません。」

~~~大使秘書.  I don't like it.  I don't like it at all.  The ambassador's a great stickler. 

「どうも気に入らないな。全く気に入らない。何事も几帳面にやるといふのが大使の仕事なんだ。」

He won't like the police within the embassy.  You do realize that this is officially foreign territory.  Police are not allowed in here without permission.

「だいたい大使館の中に警察を入れること自体からして気に入らない。ここは公的には、君も知つての通り、外国なんだ。許可なしに警察は入れない場所なんだ。」

~~~医者.  The woman's dead.

「しかし、女性が死にましたので。」

~~~秘書.  Yes, but an accident, surely.

「さう、しかし事故なんだ。さうだな。」

~~~医者.  Probably.

「多分。」

~~~秘書.  Well, wasn't it?

「ほう、すると違ふと言ふのか。」

~~~医者.  Perhaps.  But I'm not prepared to sign the death certificate.

「ひよつとすると。とにかく私は、死亡証明書に署名はまだしないつもりでゐます。」

~~~秘書.  Very well. I'll have to phone the foreign office in Scotland Yard.  Goodness only knows whether there'll be anybody there this hour.

（こちら、リチャードソンとフィリップ。リチャードソン、眠り薬を渡しながら）

~~~Ricardson.  It'll make you sleep.  You've got to try and put it right out of your head, Phile... everything you've seen and heard tonight.

「これを飲めば眠れる。いいか、フィル、君の頭から何もかも全部、出してしまふんだ。今夜君が見たり聞いたりしたもの全部をね。」

~~~Phillipe.  I understand.

「うん、分つた。」

~~~Ricardson.  Well, go to sleep... and forget it.  I'm going to give you two night-lights tonight.  It'll be daylight before you can say Jack Robinson.

~~~Ricardson.  Listen, Phile, you - you remember that telegram Mrs. Baines sent me?  You had it.  You -You made a dart of it.  What did you do with it?

~~~Phillipe.  I - I don't remember.  Why?

「覚えてない。どうして？」

~~~Ricardson.  Well, I wouldn't -  I wouldn't like anyone else to find it.  You see, th-they think Mrs. Baines was with us at the zoo.  It'd look funny, that telegram coming. 

「うん、つまり・・・電報が見つかるのは嬉しくないんだ。分るね？　みんなは、ミスィズ・ベインズが僕らと一緒に動物園に行つたと思つてゐる。そこで電報があつたりしたら、変だからね。」

And I - I don't want them to know Julie was with us tonight.  She wouldn't like it.  There's no need to tell the police more than they know.

「僕は、その・・・ジュリーが今夜僕たちと一緒だつたといふことも知られたくないんだ。ジュリーが厭だらうしね。警察に、今まで分つてゐる以上のことを、わざわざ知らせなくてもいいんだからね。」

~~~Phillipe.  Yes, I understand.（薬が効いてくる）Are you scared?

「うん、分つた。君、怖いの？」

~~~Ricardson.  Scared?  No.  Only we've -we've got to be careful what we say to policemen.  Oh, well, no good putting it off, I suppose.  Better go down and talk to them.  Good night, Phile.

「怖い？　いや、怖いんぢやない。ただ、僕らは、警察に言ふ台詞には気をつけないといけないといふことだ。さ、これ以上彼らを待たせるのはまづい。もう行かなくちや。お休み、フィル。」

~~~Phillipe.  Baines, you could run away.

He admits there was a quarrel at the head of the stairs.

「階段の上で、喧嘩をしたことは、彼も認めてゐます。」

~~~取調官.  Is that the staircase?

「あれがその階段なんだね？」

~~~医者.  Yes.

「さうです。」

~~~取調官.  Are the injuries consistent with a slip-

「怪我は、滑つたことが原因だといふ話とつじつまが合ふのか？」

（警察医、やって来て。警察医の名前はウィルスン--Wilson）

~~~警察医.  Evening, Fenton.  It's an awful hour to be called out.

「今晩は、フェントン。酷い時間に呼び出されたもんだな。」

~~~医者.  I'm used to it. It's the hour for babies.

「いや、馴れてゐる。赤ん坊の（生れる）時間だからね、この時間は。」

~~~Wilson.  Is it? Well, what's the trouble?

「ああ、なるほど。で、問題といふのは何なんだ？」

~~~秘書.  This is Inspector Hart, sir, of the special branch.  He'll help with any interpreting.

「こちらはハート調査官、警察の外国係。言葉が問題の時には、彼が手伝ふ。」

（秘書、ハートと握手。ハート、フランス語で何か言ふ）

（Je regrette que vous avez cette ennuie, Monsieur.　　と聞こえるが？？？）

（「こんなことが起きて、大変ですね。」）

「大使がゐさへすれば、問題なかつたんだが。」

~~~秘書.  No.  I was having dinner with some friends in a restaurant.

~~~取調官.  There'd be no objection, I suppose, to our seeing over the servants' quarters?

「召使のゐるところを少し見てもいいでせうな？」

~~~秘書.  No, none at all.  Through the door there.

「ええ、勿論どうぞ。そこの扉です。」

（ハート、また何かフランス語で言う）

~~~秘書.  You would trouble me much less if you'd speak English.

「英語で喋つてくれ。その方が面倒事が起らないですむ。」

~~~警察医.  Of course, the story of her slipping may be true... but the type of injuries suggest something more violent.

「君にとつては大変な夜だつたね。しかし長く引き止めるつもりはないんだ。」

~~~Richardson.  I'll tell you anything I know.

~~~第一秘書.  There was nobody else in the house, was there, when it happened?

「しかし、食器など、三人分でてゐましたな。」

~~~Richardson.  Oh, yes, of course.  I forgot.  Mrs. Baines was with us.

「ああ、さうさう。忘れてゐました。妻が一緒でした。」

~~~取調官.  Try to remember things like that.  It helps us, you know, to get the details right.

「ちやん覚えてゐて欲しいものですな。詳細を知ると、状況がよく分るんですから。」

~~~Richardson.  I'm sorry.

「すみません。」

~~~取調官.  Can we have a word with you?

「ちよつと失礼。」

（と、医者、警察医、ハート、そしてもう一人、紹介なしに入つてゐる人物、これは探偵（デニス・オディー）の４人と共に、何か話すために、リチャードソンから離れる。ここの画面で、少し離れたところにゐる人物は秘書。）

~~~医者.  Good heavens.  What's he doing there?

「何だあれは。あの子は一体何をしてゐるんだ。」

~~~医者.  Now what, boy?  Come along, Phile.  It's all right, Baines. I'll take him up.

「どうした、フィル。さあ、来なさい。ああ、ここは私がやる、ベインズ。私が連れて上る。」

（フィリップが飛行機を持っているのを見つけ）

Hello. What's this you've got hold of?   Hmm?  You don't want that now.

I'll take it. Now watch. See?

「ベインズ、この子はさつきの部屋に連れて行けばいいんだね？」

~~~Richardson.  Uh, y-yes.

「え・・・ええ。」

（この間、取調官、紙飛行機を拾い、手に取つて眺めてゐる）

~~~秘書.  Well, what was he up to?

「フィリップは何をしようとしてゐたんだ？」

~~~Richardson.  Oh, n-nothing, sir.

「ああ、その・・・別に、何も・・・」

~~~取調官.  Mr. Baines, I understand there was some sort of scene... between your wife and the boy tonight.  Do you know what it was about?

「ミスター・ベインズ、何かいざこざがあつたやうだね？　君の奥さんとあの子供の間に、今晩。何のことでだつたか、君、分つてゐるのかな？」

（この間、取調官、飛行機をいじくっている。リチャードソン、飛行機の電報が気になり、上の空）

~~~Richardson.  Well, she - sh-sh-she used to get in a fuss about... trying to keep the house tidy.

「忘れてゐました。妻は一緒ではありませんでした。」

~~~取調官.  But there were three places laid.  Who else was there?

「しかし、三人分の食器が用意されてゐた。もう一人は誰なんだ？」

~~~Richardson.  Nobody.  I- I-I must have laid it from h-habit.

「誰でもありません。多分きつと・・・習慣でつい・・・」

~~~取調官.  But the third place was used.  How do you account for that?  Well, I think we'll leave all the questions to Chief Inspector Crowe in the morning... after he's read the doctor's report.

~~~取調官.  Crowe says, will you photograph the position of the body from the top of the stairs.

「クロウの指示なんだ。階段の上から、身体の落ちる位置の写真を撮つておいてくれと。」

~~~指紋係.  Right.

「分りました。」

（取調官、部屋に入らうとして、またフィリップに出逢ひ、時計の扱ひを教へる）

~~~取調官.  No, not that way, sonny.  Like this. See?

「ああ、さうぢやないよ、坊や。かうやるんだ。分る？」

（時計、鳴る。それをフィリップに渡し、部屋に入る）

（フィリップ、指紋係に近づく）

~~~ Phillipe.  What are you doing?

「君、何してるの？」

~~~指紋係.  Hmm?  Oh, yes. See this powder?  Well, that's solved more crimes than the whole police force put together.  Here, put your thumb just down there. 

「ああ？　ああ、この粉、見えるか？　この粉の実力だがね、警察全部を寄せ集めても、この粉には敵はないほどの力なんだ。ほら、君の親指をここにつけて御覧。」

Just press it down quite like that.（フィリップ、指で手すりの表面を押す）

「さうさう、そんな風に押しつける。」

That's it.  Now put some powder on.  Now you blow and watch.（と、粉を吹き飛ばす）

See? There's only one person in the world that has a thumb like that.  And that's how we find things out.

~~~Crowe.  You know, Phillipe, I've got a boy at home very like you.  He's a bit older, that's all.  Oh, he likes marbles.  Do you like marbles?

「君と同じやうな子供が私の家にゐるんだ。少し君より年上だけど。ああ、彼はビー玉が好きでね。」

Look here.  What do you think of that one?  I think that's a champion.  Don't you?  I always win with it anyway.  I don't suppose Mrs. Baines would have liked marbles, would she?

~~~Richardson.  It was what I said.  She went for the boy.  She was hitting him.

~~~Richardson.  She came running down these stairs.  She wanted to get into that room, to Julie.  I caught hold of her.  She pushed me back.

She was hysterical.  She used to get into these rages and do anything.  I've known her to put her hand through a window she couldn't open.  I wasn't going to let her get in there.

~~~Crowe.  We've examined this staircase very carefully, Mr. Baines... and there's no evidence of her having slipped.

When people slip, they try to recover.  They leave some sign - a scratch on the banister, anything.  It's just like a car skidding.

（フィリップ、その取調官を見て）

「ああ、それ、僕です。僕が上つたんです。ねえ、ねえ、聞いて。僕、言ひたいことがある。僕、言ふことがある。本当に大切なことなんだ。」

（花瓶の土がこぼれてゐて、その土の上にハイヒールの跡あり）

~~~Crowe.  Yes, it's a woman's heel mark, all right.

「（花瓶のところに上つて来て）うん、これは女性のハイヒールの跡だ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Please, sir. Please.

「ねえ、聞いて。お願ひ。」

~~~取調官.  Run along.

「あつちに行つてなさい。」

~~~Crowe.  You can see how it happened.

「これで何が起つたか、はつきりしたな。」

~~~Phillipe.  Oh, please. It'll only take a minute.

「ねえ、聞いて。ほんの一分で終るんだから。」

~~~取調官.  She wanted to see into the bedroom...

「寝室を見やうとしたんですね。」

~~~Phillipe.  Please, sir. Please.

~~~取調官.  Maybe force her way in.

「無理やりここを通つて入らうとしたんですね。」

~~~Phillipe.  Will you listen to me, please?

「僕の言ふことを聞いて。お願ひ。」

~~~取調官.  She came along here and upset the flowerpot.

「ここまで来て、花瓶をひつくり返したんだ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Please, sir!  It's about the flowerpot.

「お願ひ。僕の話も花瓶のことなんだ。」

~~~Crowe.  Could she have got into the bedroom from there?

「（秘書に）そこから寝室には入れるんですか？」

~~~第一秘書.  Ah, yes, sir, easily.

「ええ、簡単に入れます。」

~~~Phillipe.  I must tell you. Will you listen to me?

「ねえ、僕言はなくちやならないことがあるんだ。ねえ、聞いて。」

~~~Crowe.  Come along. We don't want another accident.

「ああ、そこは危ない。また事故があるといけない。」

~~~Phillipe.  You must listen to me.

「聞いてつたら、聞いて。」

~~~Crowe.  How much easier it would be if everybody told the police the truth in the first place.

「最初から本当のことを言つてくれてゐたら、どんなに簡単だつたか。」

~~~Phillipe.  It's very important! Please!

「ねえ、大切なことなんだ。お願ひ。」

~~~Crowe.  Would you call Mr. Baines.

「ミスター・ベインズを呼んで来てくれませんか。」

~~~Morgan.  I'll get him.

「私が行きます。」

~~~Phillipe.  The flowerpot, Julie, was there when –

「ねえ、ジュリー、花瓶は僕があそこにゐた時・・・」

~~~Morgan.  It's all right. They know what happened.  She upset it before she fell.

「もういいの。警察には分つたの、何が起きたか。あの人、落ちる前に花瓶を引つくり返したの。」

（とモルガン、駆け出して地下室へと行く）

~~~Phillipe.  But it was me. I upset it.  Now, will somebody please listen to me!

「でも、引つくり返したのは、僕だ。僕が引つくり返したんだ。ねえ、誰か僕の言ふことを聞いて！」

（モルガン、リチャードソンのところへ来て）

~~~Morgan.  You don't need your hat.  They know what happened.  It's all right.  Come on upstairs.

「帽子はもういりません。警察は起きたことが何か、分りましたから。大丈夫。さ、上に上りませう。」

（こちら、フィリップとクロウ、取調官）

~~~Phillipe.  You must listen.  It will make everything all right.

「聞いて。これで全部解決なんだから。」

~~~Crowe.  Now, sonny-

「ねえ、坊や・・・」

~~~Phillipe.  It's the truth.

「これ、本当のことなんだ。」

~~~Crowe.  I'd like to call your ambassador on his return just to explain our action.

「（秘書に）大使がお帰りになつたら、大使に面会を求めて、警察のやつたことを話してほしいです。」

~~~Phillipe.  Oh, please. Oh, please.

「ねえ、聞いて。聞いて。」

（そこに、リチャードソンとモルガンが来たので、クロウ）

~~~Crowe.  Oh, Mr. Baines, we shan't require you after all.  We found some evidence up there which makes sense of your story.

「ああ、ミスター・ベインズ、結局あなたに来て戴く必要はなくなりました。あなたの話を裏づける証拠が見つかつたのです。」

~~~Richardson.  Yes, she-she's told me.

「ああ、彼女が教へてくれました。」

~~~Crowe.  Now we know how it happened, what you've said is quite clear.

「起つたことがきちんと分りました。あなたの言つてゐた通りでした。」

~~~Phillipe.  Please, I've got to tell you something.

「ねえ、僕、言はなきやならないことがあるんだ。」

~~~Crowe.  Will you send this young shaver about his business?

「このいたづら坊やをどこかに連れて行つてくれませんかね。」

~~~Richardson.  Come along, Phile.

「さあ、行かう、フィル。」

~~~Phillipe.  I've got to tell him.

「僕、言はなきやならないことが・・・」

~~~Richardson.  Sit down over there, Phile.  We'll attend to you presently.

「そこに坐つてゐて、フィル。君の話もすぐ聞きに来るよ。」

~~~第一秘書.  Come on. Come on. Over there.

「さあ、さあ。ほら、そこに坐つて。」

（とフィリップを坐らせる）

~~~Phillipe.  Sir, please! I'm telling the truth!

「僕、本当のことを言ふんだから！」

~~~第一秘書.  Sit down.  Your father always goes away at the worst possible moment.

「坐つて。お父さん、いつだつて、一番間の悪いときに出かけるんだからね。」

~~~Phillipe.  It's the truth this time.

「今度は本当のことなんだ。」

~~~Crowe.  Where did we leave the hats?

「（ハートに）帽子はどこに置いたんだつけ。」

~~~Hart.  I'll go and get them, sir.

「ああ、私が取りに行きます。」

（フィリップ、フランス語で、ハート（口髭の男）に、「あの花瓶を倒したのは僕なんだ」と言つてゐる）

~~~Crowe.  Your evidence will be needed at the inquest, Mr. Baines.

「尋問のときに、あなたの証言が必要になりますからね、ミスター・ベインズ。」

Of course, we must keep the boy out of it.

「勿論、坊やには尋問なしです。」

（こちら、フィリップとハート）

（フィリップ、フランス語で、再び、「あの花瓶を倒したのは僕なんだ。本当なんだ、これ。」と言ふ）

（ハート、腰をかがめて耳をフィリップの口に近づけて聞く。そしてただ）

~~~Hart.（フィリップの話に答えて）Oui.

「さうだね。」

（と言ふ）

（こちらクロウとリチャードソン）

~~~Richardson.  I'm afraid, sir, we've caused you some trouble.

「すみません、我々は警察にご迷惑をおかけしてしまひました。」

~~~Crowe.  That's all right.  If only- Oh, well.  That doesn't matter.

「ああ、構ひません。ただ・・・ああ、さう・・・それも大したことぢやない。」

~~~Phillipe.  Oh, please. Please.

「ねえ、ねえ・・・」

（と、クロウ或は取調官に話そうとする）

~~~Phillipe.  It's the truth. Please.  Oh, please, do listen to me.  Please.  It's very important what I want to tell you.

「これは本当のことなんだ。ねえ。聞いてよ、僕の話を。これから話すこと、本当に大事なことなんだ。」

~~~Crowe.  Well, what is it?

「さう・・・大事なことつて、何？」

~~~Phillipe.  Julie said only the truth would help Baines.

「ジュリーは、本当のことだけがベインズを助けるつて言つたんだ。」

~~~Crowe.  What do you want to say?

「で、君、何が言ひたいの？」

~~~Phillipe.  It wasn't Mrs. Baines that upset the flowerpot.  It was me. You see?  It's my fault.  I did it.

「花瓶をひつくり返したのはミスィズ・ベインズぢやないんだ。僕なんだ。分るよね？　僕がやつてしまつたんだ。僕なんだ。」

~~~Crowe.  I've told fibs in my time too.

「私もね、君の年頃には、つまらないことをよく言つたものさ。」

~~~Phillipe.  Cross my heart!

「僕、神に誓つて・・・」

（とフィリップ、胸に十字を切る）

~~~Crowe.  Shall I tell you a secret?

「坊や、君、秘密のことを言はうか？」

~~~Phillipe.  No!

「秘密なんか、いらない！」

（と去る）

（クロウ、それを見てニヤリと笑う）

（フィリップ、バルコニーに上り、ハイヒールの跡のついた土を手でかき混ぜて跡を消す）

~~~召使.  Nice weekend, Mr. Baines?

「よい週末を、ミスター・ベインズ。」

（モルガン、リチャードソンに近づく。バルコニーのフィリップ、それを見て、「やれやれ」という表情。フィリップ、去る）

（大使夫妻、帰つて来て）

~~~大使.  Phillipe!  Phillipe, your mother!

「フィリップ！　フィリップ、お母さんが帰つて来たよ！」
