~~~Jane.（地の文）It seemed the cry of a soul in pain, an appeal so wild and urgent that I knew I must go, and go quickly.
「それは苦しみから出た心からの叫び・・・それほど荒々しく、それほど急を要しているように思えた。それで私はすぐに、すぐに 行かねばならないと分った。」
Only when I knew what had happened to him, only when I had looked once more upon that tortured face could I make my decision.
「あの人に何が起ったか分った時初めて、そしてもう一度あの人の苦しみに歪んだ顔を見た時初めて、私は決心がついたのだった。」
~~~Mrs Fairfax. It was she who did it, Miss Eyre. She struck down Grace Poole as she slept, and then she set fire to Thornfield.
「あの女性がこんなことをしたのですよ、ミス・エア−。あの女性は、お付きの人、グレイス・プールが寝ている間に、そのお付きの人を殴り倒して、ソーンフィールドに火をつけたのです。」
It was her laugh in the gallery that woke me.\\
「廊下に響くあの女性の笑い声で、私を目を醒しました。」

~~~Mrs Fairfax. I ran into the nursery and wrapped Adele in a shawl and carried her down.
「私は子供部屋に駆け込み、アデッレをショールに包み、下に運びました。」
And as we came out into the courtyard, I heard her laugh again.\\
「アデッレと私が中庭に出ると、あの女性の笑い声がまた響き渡りました。」

~~~Mrs Fairfax. I looked up, and there she was on the roof, laughing and waving her arms about the battlements.\\
「見上げると、あの女性は屋根の上にいました。胸壁のところで、手を振り、大声で笑いながら。」
~~~Mrs. Fairfax. Mr. Edward saw her as he came out. He did not say anything, but went straight back into the house to try to save her.
「ミスター・エドワードがその時出てきて、あの女性を見ました。見るや否や、すぐに家に引き返し、あの女性を助けようとしました。」
All this side of the house was blazing. Smoke everywhere.
「家のこちら側は火の海でした。辺り一面、煙です。」
Then it cleared. And suddenly, we saw Mr. Edward behind her on the battlements. She saw him too.
「それから、少し煙が引きました。すると突然見えたのです。胸壁の上に、ミスター・エドワードがあの女性の後ろにいるのが。あの女性もミスター・エドワードに気づきました。」
He came towards her to help her down.
「ミスター・エドワードは、あの女性を助けようと、前に進みました。」
She stood very still for a moment, and just as he seemed to reach her, she gave a dreadful scream, and ran from him to the edge.
「あの女性は一瞬じっと立ち竦みました。そしてもう少しでミスター・エドワードの手が届くという所に来た時、駆け出し、逃げて、胸壁の角に来ました。」
The next moment, she lay smached on the pavement before us. She was dead, Miss Eyre.\\
「そして次の瞬間、胸壁から落ち、私たちの目の前の小径に叩き付けられました。あの女性は死んだのです、ミス・エアー。」

~~~Mrs. Fairfax. A great staircase fell in as he was coming down.\\

~~~Rochester. Mrs. Fairfax!\\

~~~Mrs. Fairfax. Yes, sir.\\

~~~Rochester. What the deuce are you doing in this part of the house? Adele is waiting for her supper.\\
「こんなところで何をしている。アデッレが夕食を待っているじゃないか。」
~~~Mrs. Fairfax. Yes, sir.\\
「はい、分りました。」
~~~Rochester.（犬を呼んで）Here, Pilot.\\
「おい、パイロット。」
（ジェイン、ロチェスターの目の見えないことに気づく）\\
~~~Rochester.（人の気配を感じて）Who's there?（大声で）Who are you?\\
「誰だ、そこにいるのは。お前は誰だ。」
~~~Jane. I've come back, sir.\\
「私、帰って来ました。」
（ジェイン、ロチェスターの手にキスして）\\
~~~Jane. Edward, Edward!\\
「エドワード、エドワード！」
~~~Rochester. Her very fingers. What small, soft fingers!（髪に触って） Her hair. Her little flower-soft face.\\
「ああ、彼女の指だ。何て小さな、柔らかい指だ。彼女の髪。彼女の小さな、花のように柔らかい顔。」
~~~Jane. And her heart, too, Edward.\\
「そして、彼女の心もですよ、エドワード。」
~~~Rochester. Jane. All you can feel now is mere pity. I don't want your pity.\\
「ジェイン。君は私に感じているものは、今やただ、憐れみだけだろう。私は君の憐れみは欲しくない。」

「エドワード。」
~~~Rochester. You can't spend your life on the mere wreckage of a man. You're young and fresh. You ought to get married.\\

~~~Jane. Don't send me away. Please don't send me away.\\

~~~Jane.（地の文）As the months went past, he came to see the light once more as well as to fell its warmth.
「月日が経つにつれて、彼の目は再び光が見えるようになって来た。光の暖かさを感じることが出来るのと同様に。」
To see first the glory of the sun, then the mild splendour of the moon, and at last the evening star.
「最初は太陽の輝き、次に月の素晴しさ、最後に夜の星、が見えるようになる。」
And then one day when our first-born was put into his arms,
「そして或る日、私たちの最初の子供が彼の腕に抱かれた時、」
he could see that the boy had inherited his own eyes as they once were... large, brilliant, and black.\\
「彼はその子供が自分の目を受継いでいることを見ることが出来た。それは、大きな、明るい、黒い目であった。」
