A Countess from Hong Kong 001

　これはチャップリンの映画です。チャップリンの映画は、だいたいがパントマイムですが、さうでないものが三つあります。一つが、「ニューヨークの王様」、これはあまり面白くありません。パントマイムでないもの最初で、まだ慣れてゐなかつたのでせう。次が「ライムライト」で、これは大変面白いです。チャップリン自身も主人公で出演してゐます。喜劇役者としてのチャップリンの命がかかつてゐる、からかも知れません。その次がこの「伯爵夫人」で、これは「ライムライト」ほどではありませんが、単純に見て笑へる映画です。僕は大好きです。チャップリン自身もほんのちよつと出て来ます。ボーイ長の役です。

　さて、配役ですが、

　伯爵夫人　ソフィア・ローレンがやります。ローレンは、今までの映画には出て来ませんでしたね。

　ローレンの相手役、最後に結婚する、といふ筋立てで、これはかなり無理がある筋なのですが、マーロン・ブランドーが好演してゐます。

　その二人の間を取り持つ役を、チャップリンの息子、シドニー・チャップリンがやります。この人は、「ライムライト」でもバレーのプリマドンナと結ばれる重要な役を演じてゐます。

　道化役ハドスンの役をパトリック・ギアーズといふ人がやつてゐます。が、この人はこの映画だけでしか見たことがありません。

「うん、大いにやれ。頑張るんだな。」

「アメリカに帰つたら皆に言つてやるんだ、俺は上流社会で活躍したんだとな。」

（水兵1、テーブルに近づき、女1に）

~~~水兵1. Oh, pardon me. Can I sit down?

「ああ、失礼。坐つていいかな。」

~~~女1. Please.

「どうぞ。」

~~~水兵1. I've got a ticket to dance. You a countess?

「ダンスの切符持つてるんだ。あんた、伯爵夫人？」

（女1、深く頷く）

~~~水兵1. No kiddin'! Tell me, how many countesses are there around here?

「本当か！　ちよいと教へてくれないか、このあたりに伯爵夫人て、多いのか？」

~~~女1. Oh, quite a few.

「ええ、沢山ゐるわ。」

（音楽が始まる。水兵2、水兵3、それぞれ女と踊る）

（客船。シドニー、甲板を急ぎ足で歩いてゐる）

（船室。ブランドーとタイピスト。ブランドー、演説を口述してゐる）

「あらゆる政治家、外交官、大臣達・・・彼等は全員、世界平和のために尽力せねばならない。」

~~~Sydney. Ogden, it's Harvey!

「オグデン、まだそんなスピーチの原稿か。ここは中国、香港だぞ。それなのに君はまだ、世界を救ふ話か。」

Let's get out of here. See the town. We're only staying 24 hours.

「ここを出よう。町を見るんだ。24時間しかないぞ、時間は。」

~~~Brando. Okay, sir.

「オーケー、分つたよ、ハーヴィー。」

~~~Sydney. Can ya believe it? Hong Kong. By golly, I can see a Chinaman.

「信じられるか？　香港だ。凄いぞ、ここから中国人が見える。」

~~~Brando. I wouldn't be at all surprised.

「まあ、あまり驚かないね、それには。」

（シドニー、双眼鏡で外を見ながら）

~~~Sydney. Look at them. Packed together like sardines. That's what I dislike about the poor. They have no taste.

「見てみろよ。鰯の缶詰だ。詰め込まれてゐる。貧乏人はあれだから厭になるな。趣味が悪いよ。」

They indulge in squalor. They pick the worst neighbourhoods to live in... eat the worst kind of food and dress atrociously.

「連中と言つたら、汚いのが好きなんだ。隣人といへば、最悪の人間を選び、食ひ物とくると、最低の物、着る物が又最悪ときてゐる。」

（ブランドーがニヤリと笑ふので）

That's the first smile I've seen you smile since we've been on this trip.

「おいおい、その笑ひ、この旅に出てから僕が見た始めての笑ひだぞ。」

~~~Brando. That wasn't a smile. That was a gas pain.

「ああ、今のは笑ひぢやない。おならを我慢した顔だ。」

~~~Sydney. How do you feel, buddy?

「どうなんだ？　調子は。」

「意気消沈だね。」

~~~Sydney. You should be the happiest man in the world. Six weeks you'll be divorced, and possibly the next Secretary of State.

「おいおい、世界中で一番幸せな人物な筈だぞ、君は。6週間後には離婚、そして次期国務長官になる男なんだ、君は。」

~~~Brando. We'll wait and see.

「まあな、なつてみなきやわからんさ。」

~~~Sydney. Here's the day's paper.

「ここに今日の新聞がある。」

"Ogden Mears, multimillionaire, son of the richest oilman in the world... will be the new Secretary of State."

「オグデン・ミアーズ、百万長者、世界一の石油王の息子・・・が、次期の国務長官に就任するだらう。」

~~~Brando. Let me see that. You didn't finish the sentence.

「ちよつと見せろ。やはり最後まで読んでないな。」

"According to the latest rumor. Son of the richest oilman in the world." They won't let you forget it.

「『最新の噂によれば』ぢやないか。それからいつでもこれ、『百万長者、世界一の石油王の息子』。決して忘れさせてはくれない。」

~~~Sydney. That's the burden you must carry.

「ああ、それは君が一生背負はなければならない重荷だ。」

~~~Brando. Harvey, you're a corrupting influence.

「おいおいハーヴィー、お前、俺に悪影響を与へてゐるぞ。」

~~~Sydney. Maybe, but I didn't lead you into politics.

「まあ、そんなところだ。しかし、君を政治家にしたのは僕ぢやないからね。」

~~~Brando. What else is there to do?

「他にやることつて、どんなことがあるつていふんだ。」

~~~Sydney. Murder, arson, rape. There's plenty of worthy occupations.

「殺人、放火、強姦。政治以外にも、いくらでも立派な職業はある。」

（ノックの音がして）

~~~Crawford. Crawford, sir.

「クローフォードです。」

~~~Brando. Come in, Crawford.

「入れ、クローフォード。」

（クローフォード、登場）

~~~Crawford. Just came over the wire. The President has appointed Mr Patrick Dowling... Secretary of State.

「丁度今、電報が入りました。大統領が、国務長官に、ミスター・パトリック・ダウリングを指名しました。」

~~~Brando. Dowling, huh? Well, that's show business.

「ほほう、ダウリングだと？　なるほど、人を驚かすには良い人選だ。」

~~~Sydney. Who the devil is Patrick Dowling?

「パトリック・ダウリング？　何者なんだ一体、そいつは。」

~~~Brando. Secretary of State.

「国務長官さ。」

~~~Crawford. I'll check for more news.

「もつとニュースを当つてみます、私が。」

~~~Brando. Thank you, Crawford.

「有難う、クローフォード。」

Harvey, I guess you're right. I think I'll give up trying to save the world. Tonight we're gonna celebrate Patrick Dowling's appointment.

「ハーヴィー、君が正しかつたやうだ。世界を救うのは、私は止めにした方がよささうだ。今夜はお祝いだ。パトリック・ダウリングの任命を祝すことにしよう。」

~~~Brando. Mr Clark? Where is he?

「ミスター・クラーク？　どこにゐるんだ、今。」

~~~Hudson. Up in the lounge. He says he's on his way down.

「ラウンジです。船室に降りて来ると言つてゐます。」

~~~Brando. Show him here.

「ああ、連れて来てくれ。」

~~~Hudson. Yes, sir.

「畏まりました。」

~~~Sydney. Who's Clark?

「クラークつて、誰なんです？」

~~~Brando. He's one of Father's senior directors. A venerable old gentleman.

「父親の会社の重役の一人だ。立派な老紳士さ。」

~~~Sydney. We don't want to get stuck with that old boy for the rest of the evening.

「今夜その立派な老紳士とつき合はされるのは困りますね。」

~~~Brando. No, I'll get rid of him.

「大丈夫。僕が追つ払ふ。」

~~~Sydney. Remember you just got over the flu.

「インフルエンザにかかつてゐたのが、やつと治つたところなんです。（といふ話にしませう）」

Took a long sea voyage to get away from it all. We don't want to be visiting parks and museums.

「治るのに、この船旅全日程が必要だつたと。公園や美術館に行くなんて、冗談ぢやないですからね。」

~~~Clark. Ogden, my dear boy, I haven't seen you（と、シドニーに手を差出す。シドニー、それを握る）since you were in swaddling clothes.

「やあやあ、オグデン、長いこと会はなかつたな。君が産着（うぶぎ）を着てゐた頃以来だ。」

I must say you're the replica of your father.

「いや、親父さんの顔そつくりだ、君は。」

（これでシドニーと握手してゐるのですからお笑ひですね）

~~~Brando. Uh, Mr Clark, may I present my friend Harvey Crothers?

「（ブランドー、近づいて）アー、ミスター・クラーク、友人のハーヴィー・クローザーズをご紹介します。」

~~~Clark. How do you do? I beg your pardon.

「おお、初めまして。これは失礼。」

（ブランドーの方に進み） Well, sir. Hudson tells me you're under the weather and here I am ready to show you the town.

「ハドスンの話では、君は調子が悪いさうだな。君に香港を見せようと思つてやつてきたんだが。」

~~~Brando. Unfortunately, this is my first day up after... flu. I think perhaps I better stay inside and just take things easy.

「残念ですが、インフルエンザが治つたばかりで。どうやらここに留まつて、じつとしてゐた方がよささうです。」

~~~Clark. Of course, my dear boy. I'll not disturb you.

「勿論、勿論。いや、邪魔はしない。」

But before I go, I'd like to introduce some very dear friends of mine.

「ラウンジには連中だけしかゐない。すぐ分る。」

~~~Hudson. Yes, sir.

「畏まりました。」

~~~Clark. Well, Ogden, too bad you're not up to scratch. I was looking forward to showing you around.

「いや、オグデン、君が動き回れないのは残念だ。あちこち見せたかつたんだ。」

~~~Brando. Yes, well, I'm disappointed. I was reading about it and it sounds fascinating. The botanical gardens and museums...

「ええ、こちらも残念です。香港について色々読んでゐまして、面白いところだと分つてゐましたから。植物園、美術館・・・」

~~~Clark. Oh, dear me, dear me. Botanical gardens? Ha, ha, ha!

「ええっ？　何だつて？　植物園？　ハッハッハ。」

（と、シドニーの方に進み）I think we can do better than that.

「それよりはましなことがあるやうに思ふがね、私は。」

（そこにハドスン、三人の美女を連れて入つて来る。先頭がローレン）

~~~Brando. I guess I've been reading the wrong book.

「（美女たちを見て）どうやら私の読んでゐた本が悪かつたやうです。」

~~~Clark. Ogden, these are my friends. This is Mr Ogden Mears... Mr Harvey Crothers.

「オグデン、これが私の友人だ。（女性達に）こちら、ミスター・オグデン・ミアーズ、こちらがミスター・ハーヴィー・クローザーズ。」

~~~Sydney. Excuse me. What will you have, ladies?

「失礼ですが、何をお飲みに？」

~~~Cavanotchy. Champagne.

「シャンペイン。」

~~~Sydney. Champagne, champagne.

「シャンペイン、シャンペイン。」

（ハドスン、音楽を消す）

~~~Cavanotchy. No, no, don't turn it off. Music complements

the champagne.

「駄目駄目。つけておいて。音楽とシャンペイン、相性がいいの。」

（ハドスン、音楽をつける）

~~~Brando. Ladies, would you be seated?

「みなさん、では、どうぞお坐り下さい。」

~~~Clark. Too bad you're just getting over the flu, Ogden. I thought we might go on somewhere this evening and take the ladies along.

「オグデン、インフルエンザが治つたばかりとは、運が悪いな。今夜ご婦人達と一緒にどこかにくりださうと思つてゐたのに。」

But then the night air might be dangerous for you.

「しかし、夜の空気は風邪には悪いからね。」

~~~Brando. Oh, I think if I wrap up well it'll be all right.

（香港の大きなレストラン。ブランドーとクラーク、席についている。シドニーが来て）

~~~Sydney. Where are the girls?

「女の子達はどこへ？」

~~~Brando. I don't know. I think they went to the ladies room as soon as you left.

「知らない。君がゐなくなるとすぐ、化粧室に行つたやうだ。」

~~~Sydney. I must have inspired them with the same idea.

「僕がひつこんだのもそのためだつた。どうやら連中に同じ考へを起させたやうだな。」

~~~Clark. Let me tell you about these ladies. Harvey. They are the daughters of Russian aristocrats. Their titles are absolutely genuine.

「ハーヴィー、連中の話をしてもいいかな。あれは全部、ロシアの貴族の娘なんだ。だから称号は完全に本物だ。」

Their parents escaped to Shanghai during the Russian Revolution. Shanghai was a nasty place in those days.

「ロシア革命の際に、両親が上海に亡命した。その頃の上海はひどいところでね。」

An international settlement run by seven nations. Because they had no country, their life was worthless. They could be robbed, murdered.

「7箇国の統治のもとにある、国際的都市だつた。連中は国籍がないものだから、命には何の価値もなかつた。掠奪され、殺された。」

Nobody bothered. Countess Natascha, the one sitting next to you... has had rather a sad life.

「それでも、誰も気にとめもしなかつた。ナターシャ伯爵夫人、君の隣に坐つてゐた女性だがね、彼女は悲しい人生だつた。」

She was the mistress of a gangster at the age of 14.

「14歳の時、ギャングの情婦になつたんだ。」

~~~Brando. How did the others manage to live?

「ギャングの情婦か。他の人間だつて、からうじて生きたんだらうな。」

「さう。餓死（うゑじ）にしたり、自殺したりだ。」

Some of the women worked in dance halls. The men had to compete with the cheapest labour because they couldn't leave the country.

「ダンスホールで働く女もゐた。低賃金の競争の中で生きて行かなければならなかつた。自分の国を棄てて来たんだからね。」

~~~Chiedoff. I think Harvey is very good-looking.

「ハーヴィーつて、ハンサムだわ。」

~~~Cavanotchy. A lot of good that'll do you. He's penniless.

「ハンサムはいいけど、あの人、お金ないわ。」

~~~Chiedoff. So what? Haven't you any romance in your soul?

「金がないのがどうだつていふの。あんた、ロマンスつてものがないの？」

~~~Cavanotchy. Money makes me romantic.

「金がロマンティックにしてくれるの、私は。」

~~~Chiedoff. I thought Harvey was the one with the dough.

「ハーヴィーつて、金があるのかと思つてゐたわ、私。」

~~~Cavanotchy. You have poor instincts, my dear. It's the

other one, Ogden Mears, who has the money.

「勘が悪いのね、あなたつて。オグデン・ミアーズよ、金があるのは。」

He's the son of the richest oilman in the world, and Natascha's got him hooked.

「世界一の油田王なのよ、あの人の父親は。ナターシャがすつかりあの人を引きつけてしまつた。」

~~~Loren. Mr Ogden? He's very attractive.

「ミスター・オグデン？　ああ、魅力的な人ね、あの人。」

「（チエドフに）この人の場合はね、特別。石油を発見。（ローレンに）あなた石油王とつき合へばいいわ。今日はあの人ここにゐるけど、明日はどこか別のところ。」

But I shall stick to old Papa Clark. He took me away from the dance halls.

「私はクラーク・パパにくつついてゐるわ。あの人、私をダンスホールから救つてくれたんだもの。」

（オーケストラ、始る。三人、会場に入る）

（三人、ブランドーのテーブルに近づく。ブランドー、ローレンのために椅子を引く）

~~~Cavanotchy. Listen, Milton... Pardon me, Mr Milton Clark.

Would you like to dance?

「ねえ、ミルトン・・・あ、失礼、ミスター・ミルトン・クラーク。ダンスは如何？」

（クラーク、誘ひにのり、踊る）

（チエドフ、シドニーを誘ふ。シドニー、誘ひを受ける）

「今夜は君、随分静かだね。」

~~~Loren. Am I? I'm sorry.

「あら、さうだつたかしら。失礼。」

~~~Brando. Don't apologize. I like quiet people.

~~~Loren. They're either clever or dull.

「静かな人つて、賢いか馬鹿か、どつちか。中間はないの。」

~~~Brando. I would say you're one of the clever ones.

「ダンスは如何？」

~~~Brando. No. I'd like to sit here and talk with you.

「いや、ここに坐つて、君と話してゐた方がいい。」

~~~Loren. I regret I speak English so badly.

「私、英語が下手だから・・・」

~~~Brando. You speak it beautifully. I understand you were born in Shanghai.

「君の英語、素敵だよ。上海で生れたつて聞いてゐたけど。」

~~~Loren. Yes. But my parents came from Russia.

「ええ、でも、両親はロシアから来たの。」

~~~Brando. And now they've moved to Hong Kong?

「それで、香港に引越して来たんだね？」

~~~Loren. My parents died in Shanghai when I was 13.

「二人とも、私が13の時、上海で死んだわ。」

~~~Brando. Haven't you any brothers or sisters?

「兄弟、姉妹は？」

~~~Loren. I was an only child.

「私、一人つ子なの。」

~~~Brando. Thirteen, a little young to face the world.

~~~Brando. I'm sorry. Would you like to dance?

「ああ、悪かつた。ダンス、しようか。」

~~~Loren. I'd love to.

「ええ、喜んで。」

（翌朝。船室。ブランドー、二日酔ひで、ソファで寝てゐる。シドニー、入つて来る）

~~~Sydney. Congratulations, Your Excellency. You are now a Plenipotentiary Extraordinary.

「おめでたうございます、閣下。閣下は今や、特命全権大使ですよ。」

~~~Brando. Will you ring for the steward and have him bring some ice water?

「君、すまないが、ボーイを呼んで、氷水を持つて来るやう言つてくれないか。」

~~~Sydney. Oh.

「分りました。」

（と、ベルを押す）

~~~Brando. What's this Plenni-pli-plen-what?

「特命・・・何だつて？」

~~~Sydney. Just came over the radio.

「丁度ラジオで言つてゐましたよ。」

You've been appointed... Plenipotentiary Extraordinary to the Court of Saudi Arabia.

「あなたが、サウジアラビアの特命全権大使に任命された、と。」

「やれやれ、石油関係からは永久に足は洗へない、か。」

~~~Sydney. You been sleeping on that couch all night?

「一晩中あの椅子の上で寝てゐたのか？」

（ブランドー、自分のワイシャツに、口紅で数字が書いてあるのを見て）

~~~Brando. What's this?

「何だ、これは。」

~~~Sydney. Telephone numbers.

「電話番号ですよ。」

（シャツの襟が破れてゐるのを見て）

~~~Brando. And this?

「そして、これは何だ。」

~~~Sydney. Some roughneck guy got fresh with Natascha...

in a nightclub and you clipped him.

「首のがつしりした男がやつて来て、ナターシャにうるさくしたんだ。ナイトクラブでね。それで君が奴をのしたんだ。」

~~~Brando. I clipped him? A brawl in a nightclub. Well, I'm off to a fine start as ambassador.

「僕がそいつをのした？　ナイトクラブで乱闘か。大使としては、華々しい門出だな。」

（そこにボーイが入つて来る。さつきシドニーが呼んだので）

~~~ボーイ. Steward, sir.

「ボーイです。」

~~~Brando. Would you bring me some Alka-Seltzer and ice water?

「アルカ・セルツァと氷水を頼む。」

~~~ボーイ. Yes, sir.

「畏まりました。」

~~~Sydney. You don't know Natascha? You ought to. You were pretty clubby with her last night.

I just came to tell you a batch of reporters... got on with the pilot and they're waiting now to interview you.

「記者団がやつて来ました。それをご報告に。パイロットと一緒に乗つてきて。それでボスとインタヴューださうです。」

（シドニーも入つてきて）
