Never Knew Life Could Be Like 乧

Y.M.C.A,
is just what I thought after the
music trip to the U.S. on May 17-the 24th,
it seems that not only a writer
but a mental state of the participant in each becomes ,
and impression becomes rather
strong inside.
Y.M.C.A. Camp, highland in
northwestern part of NY State, there held activities of the whole life music
group,
and it was able to meet to old
friend of Teddy Koyama at last.
It was not only delightful
encounter of Mr. Gulick,
but pro bassist Mr. Ron Naspo the
friend of Mr.& Mrs. Homma recent years,
is also waiting together with
their Madams,
and but with female friends of
tour leader Teddy Koyama in U.S. studying-abroad time.
The wonderful international
sudden star child orchestra
by music cheering of party of
beautiful and joyful wives and child was born there.
Several days life in the inside
of the vast nature of early spring, plateau,
prairie, woods, ravine, river,
and lake, intervals natural search of a walking round trip of a waterfall,
and a riverbank, horseback riding
of a path through a wood riverside, and the livestock animals in the firm,
and practice of music, 3 times of
exchange concerts were held.
The U.S. first performance with

Original type of MINYOH is
monophony music like the Gregorian chant,
and its developed type music is
called as heterophony,
basic form of most of pure
Japanese music,
and ordinary Western music is
mainly called homophony except polyphony, such as Bach.
MINYOH has the lot of attractive
factor
Anyhow, they Frost Valley people
with full sense of justice,
natural and warm heart gave us
confidence for the last concert in a historical Castle that cannot be
forgotten.
A German pioneer Fortsman left
the Summerhouse and Steinway piano,
so the junior high school
students and teachers, from NY-city, there were forty four persons in front of
us.
Ten tunes, including well-known
"KOHJOH NO TSUKI/Moon of a ruins castle" of solo singing with ocarina
on piano,
and "Marcello concerto D
minor" played by Clarinet and the orchestra, in one hour by MC of Mrs.
Emiko Homma.
There was full of musical
communication between them and us in the last half.
There were strong and spring
singing, sometimes together with handclapping, and instrument playing
on 3 world well-known American
songs,
Mockin乫 Bird Hill, Michael Row
The Boat Ashore, and When The Saints Go Marchin乫 In.
and went on serious singing of
Amazing Grace.
8th grade students did
their great job though with seeing written lyrics,
in fact I had thought if they
would sing nothing because of tune乫s oldness.
乬How beautifully two factors
melted in one music, it was! 乬
There was God of muse there, on
the last tune 乭MATSURI乭, it was naturally begun from the practice of HAYASHI.
The tune advances with many faces
of Japanese Carnival from the culture,
it get almost disappear after a
while, but fortissimo Dohhhhng!, it乫s the tune乫s final signal.
Comes a moment silence, then
happened storm of handclap with something shouting, standing ovation of all.
Something coming out of eyes of
teacher Lea, not only hers also other some students乫, even Mr. Homma乫s.
Members of band?, Guess please!
The country was crossed over,
every child and an adult became natural all together at the carnival,
all the negative hearts
disappeared in the night.
After two days stay with tour of
jazz in Harlem and musical in Broadway of NY,
left there, landed here, it has
been passing as it had been.
However it seems that there is
still sound of that carnival in 14 members乫 body.
MATSURI might be special. It
might owe to follows.
Composing was requested by cello
teacher Prof. Takahisa Nakajima,
and performed of cello ensemble
under his leading ten years ago.
And followings are obvious,
whole success owe to meeting of
whole life music activities in Aso that has been being carried for seven years
with more than 20 people for
having exchange concerts in schools and other public places.
Above Mr. Tetsuo 乬Teddy乭 Koyama,
former general director of Kumamoto YMCA,
has been working with steady and
kind mind since the 1st.
All people related to things, even
animals, nature, everything,
thank you very much! We owe to
all of you.
In the last monthly rehearsal of
HOSHINOKO String Ensemble led by writer,
weeks ago, sound became really
remarkable, although most of member could not attend to the tour.
Something must have been
doubtlessly changed.
The name of ensemble mean, star
child orchestra,
all children are created equal on
various skin-color in various languages.
A string orchestra must have a
man of various circumstances and situation,
it will be the same even in that
school students,
most important thing must be that
music is one which makes all people each other happy and valuable on the earth,
that is why the ensemble name was
put on.
Here, writer puts my little
confession,
felt that a kind of heavy rock which
had been in the heart after his birth with a personal reason,
seems almost disappeared in that
concert.
By the way, on the day before the
leaving USA, in a long-established music score store near by the Carnegie Hall,
what a surprising, met maestro
Nello SANTI.
After introducing myself, the
maestro kindly asked to a Japanese from Japan why, where, whom, how so on.
Nodded back the nod response
greatly, about concerts in Frost Valley YMCA, then smiled, took and shook my
hand.
I wonder a wonderful thing,
If it will happen that the great
maestro smilingly conducts my group somewhere, someday in the future,
like as in the movie world of
"A
hundred Men and a Girl", of Leopold Stokowski.
Such fortunate result in fact
took place in such a plateau,
"I never knew life could be
like this." If it continues doing what should be done,
there may be a wonderful thing
one day.
It also remembers that writer,
not well-known conductor shook hand of the boy
who met and excitingly said in
meal hole, in the departure morning.

No Border In Music
It was nice OSHHGATSU Japanese New Year with music.
There was a special thing in last Christmas, CDs and a DVD were sent to me.
Quite busy man/writer could joyfully listen in quiet space without any business.
The performances of my friend John was remarkable on CDs
Solo recording, duo with flute, in small combo, with great singer in big band.
I did not image that he became to such almost professional musician then.
He was my English teacher for a month in 乬autumn in London乭
Then, we had nice meetings in England, and in Scandinavia,
There was happy time between British amateur guitarist and music-educator from Japan,
Two much did musical things and understanding each cultural thing.
There was one CD 乬Inspired by Hasse乫s IMAGES乭 as subtitle
Hasse is writer乫s nickname got in his working period in Europe.
乬New String乭 main title was full of freshness that makes people to image his pureness.
All his tunes with fine play seemed very original 乬 like nature boy乭.
IMAGES, my 2nd LP that had 8 original tunes hade been timely composed like diary.
Anyhow, in fact his musical sense and guitar play became fantastic and marvelous,
I wonder that encounter to me and the time after last meeting become useful for rich mature.
乬Shikibu乫s ballade at KOU乭 from IMAGES was performed with flutist in another duo album.
Last year I visited Echizen-Shi the district where I inspired to compose of the tune,
People say that my performance on CD is sometimes heard in the Shikibu-park there.
It is a wonderful world that the same tune with some different play sounds here and there.
Round WPO New Year Concert with some Kimono audience was on TV,
There was a performance at home in the New Year乫s Eve.
Haru No Umi, typical Japanese traditional masterpiece in the season by Shakuhachi
And even flute with piano, not with KOTO of writer乫s family was plaid.
There is no border in music and between people who love music.
My friend乫s performances must be also one of the evidence.

It is really a deep apology that
Monthly columns and other pages of the HP in English had not been changed, since November 02.
It seemed that a little people tried to read the pages, renew of pages became in fact quite hard.
It probably means that him writer of the HP had not been doing remarkable activities overseas.
Or people there would not be much interested of what the writer had done even in Japan too.
The renew will be tried timely when it should be needed after this.
I will be out of Japan more times than before in coming years, for example as following information.
This is musical trip with my pupils with their musical instruments to Frost Valley YMCA camp US.
The partnership to YMCA in Japan had been getting thicker since fresh start of myself in Japan.
There was two concert of Ten Sing, jubilee chorus group from Norway in Dec 87 in Japan.
Leader and conductor stayed two nights at writer's home, I worked partly in the concerts.
In 2000, a relationship had been born between Kumamoto YMCA and the writer,
There is even steady relationship of Yokohama YMCA that invited Norwegian quire group years ago,
Now, today I often visit the college of Atsugi YMCA that is part of that, as musical advisor or leader.
There has been holding ordinal people乫s singing activity monthly since Nov. 05, and also
Music festival by college students was successfully held last month.
Now I remind my life period for round twenty years after my leaving Europe in Dec 乪85.
Not only YMCA also other person and their organization must have been helping me to progress.
Cello studying under Prof. Takahisa NAKAJIMA took me into fantastic world of music.
I became to communicate with not only the piano also this instrument, also became that
Strings and even other musical people willingly come to me to try them up in music for their life.
It is really happy to me that quite many of the pupils greatly grew up as amateur musicians.
Some of them have been doing fine work with me in places, for healing and encouraging people.
Shakuhachi, Japanese bamboo flute that I started studying under Prof. Kyouzan YAMAKAWA,
After leaving of Yamaha Music Found. in 乪99, made me maestro of this instrument last summer.
Prof. NAKAJIMA who really in regrettable fact passed away last year must helped to pass.
He performed premier of Hoshi乫s Concertante for solo Shakuhachi and cello orchestra in Dec. 05.
I now feel that I can naturally make nicer global music with Japanese traditional mind.
JOYA NO KANE, 108 times bell rings big temples in the midnight of the last day of year.
When people hear the dim sound that comes through stern and silent winter air.
While the hearing, wives serve TOSHIKOSHI SOBA, Japanese noodle as the tradition.
We, mostly elder people calmly are in a kind of feeling we really are Japanese then
Then comes SHOUGATSU, New Year celebration is the most important tradition like Christmas,
Some people with Kimono fashion is seen in the town, although our life style became very modern,
Traditional Japanese music is also heard in these couple of days on broadcast and in public space,
HARU NO UMI played by Shakuhachi and KOTO, 13 strings instrument is the typical tune.
Actually in many cases every day depend even on people helplessly passed away,
I deeply appreciate to all my people who have been helping and supporting me.

It became so bright in this week in Japan where had been a bit dark quite long time.
Two Novel prizes landed.
Especially in case of Mr.Tanaka, it is really a fine and fantastic,
Swedish Royal Academy has chosen an unknown chemical researcher with the purest way.
Several months ago, I informed
the exhibition in Japan 丠g100 years of the Novel prizes丠h on the home-page
I thought It was obvious that the theme of the event 乬Environment glows Creativity乭
Was the fundamental policy in music and other education or leaning world.
The report of the talks to children by Dr. Shirakawa, Dr. Noyori and others told
That the curiosity for the earth and living thing,
And aspiration for the new value in their childhood,
Such things still wonderfully carries on even now until they got big adult.
The new prizewinners seems they were also such children.

8 musical lovers with me came to Toke, Chiba city,
Had a concert in a rehabilitation hospital for 80 people, patients and staffs there.
There were musical instruments recorder key-harmonica, violin, cello,
And there were their warm sounds and joyful singing on season乫s lovely songs,
乬HAMABENOUTA乭, 乬Dreaming Home And Mother乭, and others
Many patients tried to make clear rhythm on a funny one 乬MURAMATSURI乭
It will be so nice if it became some sorts of small help on them
With music that all made together even in short time.
The musical lovers planed this activity after the seminar in ASO in July.
It is not only for the patients also for our selves.
We also have the curiosity for the earth and living thing,
And aspiration for the new value with musical activity in Japan.
We wish to advance more like as children.

Nowadays, our earth is getting warmer and warmer year by year.
Abnormal climate often happens and brings violent disasters
For people, animals, plant and other things everywhere in the world.
There was bad news of highest temperature乫s new records in this summer, in Japan.
Well,
It seems that there is an interesting connection between summer and sound.
It comes the big thunder after few days of terrible hot days.
The nearest and biggest one brings us not only cool shower like a flood,
But also the horrible attack to the heart.
One day, when man thinks it might be a thunder in distance,
It is sound of fireworks in Yokohama port.
So many people go to see, many of them wearing on YUKATA.
Seeing beautiful fire like the shortest life of flowers in seconds from my house,
And enjoying the sounds after disappear several seconds later, is really a happy habit.
Heat-island 丠
I wonder if people are getting more and more today,
Willing to depend on the air-conditioner instead of the natural wind.
Sweat, much sweat is just natural in hot summer.
Getting cool and fresh drinking at the same time, keeps people very healthy.
In perfectly air-conditioned closed room that shut many sound out,
乬Are you really feeling coolness?乭
乬Is not coolness feeling of opened mind?乭
There is much sound in open-air, insects, birds, wind bells, voice of sellers丠c
Goldfishes, ice candy, TOHFU soy bean curd, fresh fishes and vegetables丠c
There were various voices of sellers like songs of a second in towns.
In jazz was it for instance, is not there 乬 watermelon-man乭, very popular tune.
Is it impossible to hear their voices now?
However even at my home today, wind bells FUURIN
One of the most typical Japanese traditions in summer now is almost not seen.
The styles of our life have been much changed in many ways.
I wonder if we got we think these sounds that were so necessary are noisy to us.
It sounds music of Bon Festival dance through the evening breeze.
People some of who wear YUKATA dance on their standard tunes.
They enjoy with family and friends and remind memories with decedent.
The other day, it was a concert where I played.
Leaders, pupils with SHAKUHACHI, KOTO and SHAMISEN wore YUKATA.
The sounds of Japanese traditional instruments fit in summer too.
You can feel coolness if you are familiar with natural sounds.

When a typical typhoon was passing on the east Chinese sea,
40 people who joyfully like to live with music through their life came to ASO
The world largest crater where are several communities and even the railway there,
For having musical seminar, communications and real activities,
From Kyuhshuh and Honshuh islands, even from England in the beginning of July.
Mr. Koyama who loves music and musical thing also took an important part in the mutter.
We considered having the event for leaders and also civilians once a year in ASO.
There were small musical instruments
Recorders, flute, Key-harmonica, Taishohkoto/a Japanese inst., guitar, violin, cello丠c
And there were nice songs together with them.
The participants and audiences who were from small children to old people
Had the same big fun and were in the same deep emotion with the music.
We had two concerts one in the Kumamoto YMCA ASO Camp,
and specially in ASO JOUJUEN, town丠fs public home for old people.
The first concert for the home in the history seemed,
People mainly eighties up to 94 years there, could in fact get so funny and happy.
There were their favorite Japanese songs and the songs in Japanese
That came from Germany and other countries
When we did not have enough own songs here in Meiji and Taishoh era.
As a mutter of fact,
Quite many of lyrics seem, do not fit for not only children also adult today,
Because of the original meaning, too few information,
Ordinary Japanese songs do not have any meaning on a note of the melody.
So, the newly translated lyrics were provided this time,
They were no doubt, nicely accepted.
By the way,
It is so nice that young college students and old people happily sing together.
We are missing these kinds of scenes nowadays in Japan.
Music is really a valuable thing for human being in the life,
The importance, feeling of the history, kindness among living things so on.

The scene of ASO mountains and the scene of Scandinavian landscape became one,
Typical midsummer music from Sweden was sounding in headphone stereo.
Satisfaction made him being into beautiful dream.

It has not come the typical rainy season yet,
Though the natural phenomenon of this a half a year had been coming
Almost a half of a month faster than the usual in Japan.
I am not sure it is good when you think about FIFA W.C. because of agriculture here.
Anyhow, the news tells
The temperature on Kumamoto area came up and up to 30degrees C. on these days.
It must be nonsense if we have no rainy season and have directly summer.
This month again became very lucky.
I was in the concert of that Yo-Yo Ma who had been longed to listen long time.
A big American car-company that approved of the great cellist
Invited hundreds of families to his Silk-road Ensemble in Suntory-Hall.
I felt like I became Marco Polo in the concert.
There was fantastic music with interesting stories,
That have been being told and told among people through the periods,
In places in the silk-road area.
An old European was there on the beginning,
How came the instrument Batohkin, Mongolian cello,
others from Azelbaydzhan, Japan, Cina丠c
Italian was in the end.
It was round about ten or such years ago,
It was joyful and impressed concert named Canto-Popolare-Italiano.
I felt much taste of musical characters and effects from middle and west Asia.
Paniagua from Spain, and many even on Celtic,
If it is pops or folklore it did not mutter,
I many times get such nostalgic feeling of relaxation in various groups from Europe.
This feeling in my mind must started when I was in a concert in Japan 22 years ago,
Named Musicians from Silk-road produced by Fumio Koizumi.
Well, it is coming the 1st 乬Musical Activity Through Life乭 in the beginning of July.
From women乫s college students who study music to old people who have gland children,
Many are participating with feeling

The event is wished would be with people from Asian countries on the 3rd.
It could be said that
Music, through Chinese land and Korean peninsula
Before Japanese creates own in Edo era,
And music, imported Germany and other lands after Meiji era,
They must be a kind of music of middle and west Asia.
What we should do now in information-oriented society,
How we should do for children who must care coming periods on the earth.
Not only Yo-Yo Ma who has Asian roots, and others
Also we who can see and do certain things must do something, we must act.
There are many things we can do for having nice relationship with music.
Be Asia as Ace

I remind an essay written by Tuyoshi Tsutsumi Cellist when I travel with my love, cello by air.
It is quite difficult that we can manage to bring cello on board
Without the same amount of the child fee payment even in case of many free seats.
I try to get down deeply in my case.
There is a town named Kanzaki where products well-known Soumen in Saga Prefecture.
The town has vivid spirit,
As the participation to the Japan final of high-school乫s baseball team,
The new starting of Yoshinogari monument as nation乫s direct management,
And others in this the first year of the new century.
Some people related to the culture association are trying to start to do true and general activity
With music, dance, play, and others
For the participation to the annual event of the prefecture this year.
I have been trying to help people with my musical ability
Following an enthusiastic musical female leader, friend.
There was a recording of 3 tunes,
A folklore there that even old people never sing,
A well-known pop hit one
And a new old-fashioned song,
Arranged and composed by me.
Mostly amateur musicians did their great job
With their instruments including even Shamisen, Shakuhachi typical Japanese ones.
The music that was recorded by them must help
To make new creation and must lead the big event.
In Kumamoto, neighbor of Saga, my remarkable friend has been doing there
Takes care of creative cultural activities through YMCA for many people.
Though we could not do enough preparation in a short period this time,
The music in seven small concerts was much well received by many and various people.
I plaid
乬Twinkle little star乭,
Bach乫s solo work, well-known 乬Swan乭,
乬Song my mother taught me乭,
And others for kids in kindergarten,
Students of collage for caring old people,
Volunteer workers on the phone for deeply worried people
Who can never consult anybody but them.
The music that I brought seemed,
Sounded in both small cosmos of them and my self.
Music must be the thing that brings wonderful power to the people.
I could again visited YMCA Aso Camp
Since last late November before going on board for Tokyo.
There was fresh and beautiful green.
There was a wonderful happening.
Trumpet sound that was made by my friend who had been just a typical amateur musical fan
Beautifully filled a hall, forest and blue sky.
He said that he has been practicing this his favorite instrument little by little every day,
After we met one year ago.
That I did volunteer help more than 10 years
When Yokohama YMCA had Ten-Sing concert from Norway leaded me to the friend today.
My face must has been changed by great meeting to many people in Kyuushu island.
There was my favorite instrument next to me in the evening plane to the east.

Ever Green
Fresh green season has come to us.
I always try to be where my compositions are
played, because of my most lifework.
It was the first visit to TATESHINA for the
listening to premier of new tune.
A duo-sonata was performed in a private
party
By two amateur 60 years old guitarists who finish their
common work as civilians,
And start their musical work as guitarists.
They have been doing remarkable musical
activities,
And now are going to have recitals that even a quite many
professional musicians are difficult to have,
In Autumn in their hometowns, KANAGAWA and AICHI.
It is obviously the memorial trials as
maiden voyage.
They seem getting more active and creative
as
乬Spring with strings,
Sing in the stormy see,
Swing in new days happily
Well, there is a story of the duo.
There was a nice meeting of two men one year
ago in a TETSUBIKIKAI,
Amateur players group party that came through the guitar-club
of Tohoku-Univ.,
After many years of their leaving the study and the student.
The first club manager had proposed the
first meeting, it has been almost 20 years since then.
This should be named 乬great opened party乭.
Not only old club people, but also any
musical lover can come,
Join and enjoy even professional musicians.
I hear that one of the best critic, Mr.
Jirou Hamada and other well-known musical persons joined.
I got in after my publication of 12 compositions
for guitar and other instruments
On a monthly music-magazine.
Some string and wind instruments players and
singers became to join,
Ordinary people in party concerts areas more and more became
to join one by one,
The door to the party has been getting wider and wider.
It was a great fun that I met the old male
vocal quartet 乬 Crescents Four 乬
Came from KansaiGakuin Univ. Glee-Club in the party.
Their big and beautiful choral music made me
so exiting in days
When I was a conductor in a male chorus of my high school.
They sang, guitar trio and other plaid,
there was only the music.
There was not any border among all the
people.
乬 How we should live in left plenty of time乭
Must be one of the most important theme in this century.
乬 Playing guitar through the night 乬 the
meaning of the party
Seems getting quite difficult for most of them,
乬Joyful advance together, and make things better 乭 does not
seem pretty easy.
The policy of Life Education might be in my
opinion as
乬 Carrying as long, happy, spreading, and effective as 乬.
Under the pure blue sky, among the fresh
green of early June,
A following line by an American great businessman came to me
When I shook two guitarists乫 hands for seeing soon again.
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state
of mind.
After a while, I started cello study, it was
my 45th birthday.
Japanese Summer begins with the fresh green
time,
There is quite a long rainy term for burning
season.
